Influence of Sowing Time to Various Cotton Genotypes at Hill Tracts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The sowing date experiment, comprised of five planting dates on four upland cotton cultivars, was conducted to investigate appropriate sowing time of the cultivars at Balaghata, Bandarban during 2013-14. The significant effects of sowing time were found for plant height, boll per plant, number of fruiting branch per plant, individual boll weight and seed cotton yield. Significant difference among the studied varieties were observed for the plant height, individual boll weight and seed cotton yield. While the interaction effect of the sowing time and variety was found for seed cotton yield. The highest seed cotton yield (3285 kg ha^-1) was obtained from the Rupali-1 variety sowing on 20 June. While the second highest seed cotton yield (2263 kg ha^-1) from DM-3 and CB-12 was obtained from the sowing on 05 June.

Objectives:

To investigate the optimum sowing period for four cotton under agro-climatic conditions of Balaghata, Bandarban.

Methodology:

A sowing date experiment of five planting dates (5 June, 20 June, 5 July, 20 July and 5 August) was conducted to investigate the appropriate sowing time of four upland cotton cultivars (DM-3, Rupali-1, Suvro and CB-12) at Balaghata, Bandarban during 2013-14 cropring season. The experiment was conducted in factorial RCBD with three replications. The unit plot size was 3.6m x 4.5m and the spacing was 90cm x 45cm. After germination the thinning operations were completed to maintain one plant per hill. The weeding, inter culturing and plant protection measures were adopted equally as and when required. Recommended doses of inorganic fertilizers were applied. The yield and yield contributing characters data were recorded from the 2 middle rows. The statistical analysis were carried out by CropStat 7.2.

The highest plant height (142.9 cm) was recorded in CB-12 cultivar while the lowest plant height 127.2 cm was recorded in DM-3 cultivar. The highest single boll weight 5.1g was found in Rupali-1 while the lowest (4.8g) in CB-12. The highest seed cotton yield 1710 kg ha^-1 was obtained from Rupali-1 cultivar while the lowest seed cotton yield (1190 kg ha^-1) was recorded from Suvro.

Influence of Sowing Time:

The results indicated that with the delay in planting time from 5 June to 20 July plant height gradually increased than again it decreased on 5 August sowing. Similar trend was observed for the fruiting branch plant^-1. However, the Boll plant^-1, Single boll weight (g) and Seed cotton yield (Kg ha^-1) were highest in early sowing that decreased in later sowing.

Interaction effect:

The results revealed that DM-3 gave the highest seed cotton yield on 05 June and with the delay in sowing the seed cotton yield decreased. The similar trend was observed for CB-12. Rupali-1 gave the highest seed cotton yield on 20 June and with the earlier or later sowing of this date the seed cotton yield decreased significantly. Moreover, the cultivar Suvro gave the similar yield sowing on 5 anf 20 June after that seed cotton yield decreased.
