Efficacy of Different Herbicides Over Manual Weeding in Controlling Cotton Weed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Efficacy of seven herbicides and their combination were assessed and compared with manual weeding during 2013-14 cropping season at Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in RCBD design with three replication. Nine different weed species were found in the experimental field and most abundant was Bermuda Grass (37.23 to 43.65%) and Nut Sedge (26.65 to 31.55%). Application of Indazifalam @ 0.15 L ha^-1 at 14 DBS and combination of glyphosate and parquet @ 3.5 L and 2.8 L ha^-1 at 14 DAS of cotton sowing showed highest weed control efficiency. But combined application of glyphosate and parquet showed highest benefit (1.37) compared to hand weeding and other herbicide application. Highest seed cotton yield (1211kg ha^-1), boll number (19.6 plant-1) and single boll weight (6.27 g plant^-1) was found in the same treatment. Seedling mortality was found higher when herbicide applied after cotton sowing compared to herbicide applied before cotton sowing. Application of indazifalam @ 0.15 L ha^-1 14 days before cotton sowing found less cotton seed germination.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to select proper herbicide and their efficacy in controlling cotton weed over manual weeding.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur during 2013-2014 cropping season. Nine different treatments and one weedy check were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replication. The treatments including single application of seven different herbicides (Glyphosate @ 3.5 L, Paraquat @ 2.8 L, Indazifalam @ 0.15 L ha^-1 at 14 DBS and Orthosulfamuron @ 0.15 g, Phenoxyprop-P-Ethyle @ 0.75 L, Cyhalophob-butayl @ 1.0 L and Bispyribac sodium @ 0.15 g ha^-1 at 14 DAS), combined application of glyphosate @ 3.5 L and paraquat @ 2.80 L ha^-1 at 14 DBS and three hand weeding and weedy check as control plot. The unit plot size was 5.4m×4.5m=24.3 m-2. Cotton variety CB-9 was used as test crop and was sown on 01 September 2013 in the experimental field.

Achievement/Findings:

The result of the experiment revealed that herbicide applied after cotton sowing has significant effect on seedling mortality. But herbicide applied before cotton sowing has no significant effect on seedling mortality except T₇ (Indazifalam @ 0.15 L ha-1 at 14 DBS), which showed lowest cotton seed germination and highest seedling mortality among the treatments. The highest number of cotton plant was recorded from T₂and it was lowest in T₇. The highest economic return was recorded from T₅, mixture application of glyphosate @ 3.5 L and Paraquat @ 2.8 L ha-1 at 14 days before cotton sowing.
