A pot experiment was,conducted for dose selection of eight insecticides against jute hairy caterpillar at greenhouse and two field experiments were conducted with selected doses of same insecticides at two regional and sub-station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) during the period April-July, 2008. The doses found economic and effective in the pot experiment were 1 ml/lit for Fenvet 20EC and Celcron 50EC; 2 ml/lit for King Lamda 2.5EC and Queenphos 25 EC; 3.5ml/lit for Noknon 60 EC; 1 gm/lit for Lavin 85 WP; 3 gm/lit for Kalvin 85 WP and Emite 5 WDG. The most effective insecticide was found Celcron 50 EC giving 92.50% reduction of infestation over control in the field of JAES followed by Noknon 60EC, Queenphos 25 EC, Emite l.5WDG, King Lamda 2.5 EC, Fenvet 20 EC, Kalvin 85 WP and Lavin 85 WP giving 90.70, 89.10, 89.03, 88.97, 88.81, 88.77 and 88.23 % reduction of infestation over control respectively. At the field of Tarabo, the most effective insecticide was found Emite 1.5 WDG giving 93.60% reduction of infestation over control followed by Celcron 50 EC, Lavin 85 WP, Fenvet 20 EC, King Lamda 2.5 EC, Queenphos 25 EC and Noknon 60 EC giving 91.77,91.6090.13,89.90,89.10,88.90 and 87.00% reduction of infestation over control respectively. Effectiveness of all insecticides were found significantly (p=0.05) better than the control giving more than 88% reduction of infestation and more than 2.62 ton/ha fibre yield at both the test places.

  1. To select economic and effective doses of some chemical insecticides for the farmers use.
  2. To evaluate the efficacy of these chemical insecticides against jute hairy caterpillar at field level and compare with a standard chemical insecticide.

The experiment was conducted in three different locations that were greenhouse of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Dhaka, Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj and Jute Research Sub-station, Tarabo, Naryanganj during the jute season (April-July) 2008. Jute variety 0-9887 was grown in earthen pot at greenhouse premises of Central station, BJRI, Dhaka. Three pots were used for each treatment where five plants were allowed in each pot. Plants of each pot were covered with mosquito net so that insect cannot move from one pot to another. Twenty 3rd instar hairy caterpillar larvae were released on the 45 days old plants of each pot covered with mosquito net. Next day three doses of each insecticide were sprayed on the potted plants. Number of live hairy caterpillar was counted after 3 and 5 days of spray. The experiment was set in two different regional and substations of BJRI. The variety 0- 9897 was grown in 3x3m2 plot with three replications following RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design). After 60 days of sowing when sufficient natural infestation of 2th and 3th instar caterpillar was built up in the plot naturally, insecticides (1) Fenvet 20 EC, (2) Celcron 50 EC, (3) King Lamda 2.5 EC, (4) Kalvin 85 WP, (5) Queenphos 25 EC, (6) Lavin 85 WP, (7) Emite 5 WDG and (8) Noknon 60 EC @ 500 ml/ha, 550 ml/ha, 1 lit/ha, 1.5 kg/ha, 1 lit/ha, 500 gm/ha, 1.5 kg/ha and 1.7 lit/ha respectively were sprayed along with a standard Hayzinon 60 EC (1.5 kg/ha). Control plots were remain untreated. Population of caterpillar/plot was recorded before spray and at 3th and 7th day after spray.

It may concluded that insecticides were found significantly (p=0.05) better than the control giving more than 88% reduction of infestation and more than 2.62 ton/ha fibre yield at both the test places.
