Field Screening of Some Promising Lines of Jute (corchorus Sp.) Against Jute Stem Weevil (apion Corchori Marsh)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Manikganj and Rangpur regional stations of BJRI during the jute season 2006-07 and 2007-08 to screen out some promising lines against jute stem weevil. In case of capsularis, the highest % of infestation (92.25) and number of knot/plant (4.85) was recorded in CVL-1 and lowest % of infestation (72.65) and number of knot/plant (2.27) was observed in line 2104. On the other hand, in case of olitorius, the highest % of infestation (95) and number of knot/plant (5.025) was observed in variety 0-9897 and lowest % of infestation (71.38) and number of knot/plant (2.43) was found in line 0-795. None of the lines showed resistance to stem weevil, however the capsularis line 2104 and promising line 0-795 may be treated as tolerant to stem weevil.

Objectives:

To screen several jute promising lines/varieties to find out resistance sources against stem weevil.

Methodology:

Eight promising lines of jute (4 Corchorus capsularis and 4 Corchorus olitorius) were screened in the field for a period of two years where CVL-1 and 0-9897 were check varieties. The experiments were conducted during the jute seasons of 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 at JAES, farm Manikganj and at Rangpur farm. A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was followed with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 4mx3m and row-to-row distance was 25cm. The fields were exposed to natural infestation and no control measures were taken against stem weevil. After 120 days of sowing, a total 50 plants from each plot were harvested randomly and brought into the laboratory for dissection to observe and record the stem weevil infestation. The data of stem weevil infested plants were expressed into percentage. The average number of knots per plant was recorded. The amount of damage was calculated according to following formula. Amount of damage = (Extent of damage x intensity) x 100. Where, Extent = Percent attacked stem, Intensity= Average number of knots in attacked stem.

It may be found in line 0-795. None of the lines showed resistance to stem weevil, however the capsularis line 2104 and promising line 0-795 may be treated as tolerant to stem weevil.
