Economic Efficacy of Some Seem Products for the Conrtol of Jute Yellow Mite, Polyphagotarsonemus Latus (banks)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were conducted in the experimental field of Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj during the period from March to December, 2007 to evaluate the efficacy of neem products for the control of jute yellow mite and also to assess the economics of the use of neem products in respect of net return. Highest percent reduction of plant infestation was recorded (70.26 and 79.23) in both the single and double spray of 2% neem oil treated plots respectively. The best Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) 15.55 was obtained from the 2% neem oil treated plot followed by neem seed kernel extract @ 1: 1 0, green neem leaf extract @ 1 :20 giving benefit cost ratio 14.77 and 12.42 respectively. The lowest benefit cost ratio (9.74) was recorded from Nembicidine treated plot.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the efficacy of some neem product for the control jute yellow mite.

2. To know the economies of the use of neem products in respect of net return.

Methodology:

Ten grams of fresh green leaves were taken into an electric blender with 200 ml. of water and blended. The mixture was filtered through fine cloth and considered as 1 :20 green neem leaf extract. Green neem leaves were shed dried for 7 days to obtain dry neem leaves. Ten gram of dry neem leaves were soaked 500 ml of water for over night and the extract was filtered through fine linen cloth to get 1:50 dry neem leaf extract. Matured neem fruits were deep in water for 48 hours for de-pulping. Then clean seeds were dried in air for 24 hrs. Ten gram of seeds were crushed and dissolved in 10 ml of water for over night to get 1:10 neem seed extract. The suspensions were filtered through linen cloth. 2% neem oil was prepared (98 % water + 2% oil) adding required amount of distilled water from 100% stock solution. The emulsion of neem oil in water was prepared by adding 1 % detergent (Liquid Nikalin as emulsifier) as described. Tossa Jute 0-9897 was grown in the field of JAES, Manikganj following RCBD. After sufficient natural infestation built up in all the plots, green neem leaf, dry neem leaf neem seed kernel extracts, emulsified concentration of neem oil and along with bio pesticide, nembicidine were sprayed on the infested plots. The control plots were kept untreated and each treatment was replicated 4 times. Number of mite infested plants were recorded before spray and at 7^th day after spray for calculation of % Reduction of infestation over control.

Finally it may be concluded to Benefit cost ratios of neem products were estimated as one of the parameters for comparison of their economic benefit. The highest benefit cost ratio (15.55) was obtained from the plots which was treated with 2% Neem oil followed by Neem seed kernel extract @ 1:10, Green neem leaf extract @ 1:20 giving 14.77,12.42 and 10.70, benefit cost, ratio respectively. The lowest 9.74) benefit cost ratio was recorded from Nembicidine (1.5 L/h) treated plots. So; neem products may be used economically and safely for control of jute yellow mite.
