A field trial was conducted at the Central Jute Research Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Manikganj, during 2004 to 2007 to estimate the phosphorus balance in soil under some important jute- included and excluded cropping patterns. The crops were potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), jute (Corchorus olitorius L.), broadcast aus lice and transplanted aman rice (Oryza sativa L.). The soil of the experimental site represents Melandha soil series under Noncalcareous Brown Floodplain soil (General Soil Type) which belongs to Agro Ecological Zone No. 8 (Young Brahmaputra and Jumuna Floodplain). Different cropping patterns including and/or excluding jute were used as treatments where potato as base crops in rabi season for three consecutive years in the same field. The treatments (cropping patterns) were Potato - Jute - T. arnan, Potato - B. aus - T. aman, Potato-Fallow - T. aman, and Fallow - Jute - T. arnan. Fertilizers were used as per recommendations for each crop. Considering the P addition in soil with all the tested crops, jute is the best and has a constructive impact on following crops. When jute is included in the pattern, it has a positive impact on phosphorus balance compared to other cropping patterns. In view of, phosphorus balance in all the tested cropping sequences, Potato - Jute - T. aman is the best, followed by Fallow - Jute - T. aman and Potato - Fallow - T. aman.

To know the phosphorus balance by potato, jute, B. aus, and T. aman crops and in cropping patterns.

The experiment was conducted at the Central Jute Research Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Manikganj, Bangladesh, during 2004 to 2007. The test crops were potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), jute (Corchorus olitorius L.), broadcast aus rice and transplanted aman rice (Oryza sativa L.). Unit plot size was 6 m X 6 m for each treatment having 1 m distance between adjacent plots. Four cropping sequences and three years were used in split plot design, where, years were in main plot and cropping sequences were in sub plots. Four replications were included for each treatment. Potato as base crop in rabi season and different cropping patterns including and/or excluding jute were used as treatments and which were Potato - Jute - T. aman (T1), Potato - B. aus - T. aman (T2) Potato - Fallow - T. aman (T3), and Fallow - Jute - T. aman (T4). Fertilizers were applied as per Fertilizer Recommendation Guide of Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (3) at the rate of 160-30-120-20,90-10-30-20,60-20-35-15 and 90-20-40-15 kg N-P-K-S kg ha for potato, jute, B. aus and T. aman, respectively. The varieties were Diamont (Potato), OM-l (Jute), BRRI Dhan-24 (Broadcast aus rice) and BRRI Dhan-33 (Transplanted aman rice). Urea, Triple Supper Phosphate (TSP), Murate of Potash (MP) and Gypsum were used for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and Effect of Jute Cultivation on Phosphorus Balance in Soil Noncalcareous Brown Floodplain general soil type which belongs to Agro Ecological Zone No. 8 (Young Brahmaputra and Jumuna Floodplain). Before setting the experiments and after each season or crop harvest soil and plant samples were collected from the experimental field. Plant samples: root, stover and tuber of potato plant, root, stick, leaf-l (defoliated during growing period), leaf-2 (with plant during harvest), and bark of jute plant, and root, straw and grain of B. aus rice, T. Aman rice plant were considered as different parts. Root samples were collected as outlined. Particle-size analysis (14); textural classes (24); soil bulk density and particle density (10); soil pH, soil organic matter and total nitrogen (22); total P (26), total S (20), and total K (Flame Photometer, Gallenkemp) of collected plant (for phosphorus) and soil samples were performed. Crop establishment and agronomic practices were performed as per recommendation made by BARI (5) for potato, BJRI (9) for jute and BRRI (11) for broadcast aus rice and transplanted am an rice. Collected data were analyzed by using MSTAT, a software for statistical analyses (25). Balance sheets of phosphorus (P) were prepared after each crop season as affected by treatments of experiment as the difference between the nutrient inputs (soil status plus applied as fertilizers and/or from crop residue) and outputs (uptake by crop plants) in consideration with unaccounted gain and loss.

Considering the P addition in soil with all the tested crops, jute is the best and has a constructive impact on crops. When jute is included in the pattern, it may concluded that it has a positive impact on phosphorus balance compared to other cropping patterns. In view of, phosphorus balance in all the tested cropping sequences, Potato - Jute - T. aman is the best, followed by Fallow - Jute - T. aman and Potato - Fallow - T. aman.
