Yield Maximization of Sesame Through Management Practices Under Aez-9

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Package of management practices \vas studied on sesame (T-6) at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur during two consecutive summer seasons of 1993 and 1994 under rainfed condition. The objective was to determine the package of improve management practices for higher yield. Nine management practices, viz. Broadcast Sowing (BS) without post sowing care; BS+ hand weeding (HW) and 20 DAE; BS+ fertilizer (F); BS+ F+ HW; Line sowing (LS) without post sowing care; LS+HW at 20 DAE; LS+ F; LS+ F+ HW and LS+ F+ HW + insect control (IC) were used in the study. The results revealed that the sowing method i.e., broadcasting or line sowing failed to bring any yield advantage in both the years. Application of fertilizer gave good response when one hand weeding was done. Line sowing with fertilizer, hand weeding and insect control produced the highest grain yield in both the years which was statistically identical to the yield of fertilizer application with hand weeding irrespective of sowing method.

Objectives:

To determine the package of improve management practices for higher yield of sesame in Jamalpur region under AEZ-9.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur for two consecutive summer seasons of 1993 and 1994. The objective of the study was to determine the package of improve management practices for higher yield of sesame. The experimental area was a rainfed medium high land of clay loam soil having the pH value of 6.80. The treatments including in study were viz., broadcast sowing (BS) without post sowing care; BS + hand weeding (HW) at 20 DAE; BS+F+ HW ; Line sowing (LS) without post sowing care; LS + HW at 20 DAE; LS + F; LS + F + HW and LS + F + HW + insect control (IC). The variety used was T-6 and the seed rate was 8 kg/ha. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 5m. The land was fertilized with 60 kg N, 55 kg P₂0₅ and 40 kg K₂0 per hectare through Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of Potash (MP), respectively. The entire amount of TSP and MP and half of the urea were applied at the time of final land preparation. The rest urea was top-dressed before flowering. The seeds were sown in 20 em apart row in line sowing methods. The seeds were sown on March 12 and April 5, for 1993 and 1994, respectively and the crop was harvested on June 14 and June 27, in 1993 and 1994, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of the present findings it may be . concluded that line sowing with fertilizer, hand weeding and insect control produced the highest yield which was equivalent to 155% higher yield compared to line sowing without post sowing care. On the other hand, higher yield was also obtained from fertilizer application with hand weeding in broadcast and line sowing method which was also equivalent to 149% and 148% higher yield, respectively compared to sowing without post care.
