Effect of Integrated Nutrient on Growth and Yield of Jute (corchorus Olitorius L.) and Soil Organic Matter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect of integrated nutrients on the growth and yield of fibre of the jute variety 0-72 as well as on soil organic matter content. The trial was carried out at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj under AEZ no. 8 (Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplain) during 2007-08. There were ten selective treatments. i.e., T₁: RDF, T₂: 5 ton Cow dung, T₃: 5 ton Poultry manure, T₄: (2½ ton Cow dung + 2½ ton Poultry manure, T₅: 5 ton Cow dung + ½ RDF, T₆: 5 ton Poultry manure + ½ RDF, T₇: 2½ ton Cow dung + ½ RDF), T₈: 2½ ton Poultry manure + ½ RDF, T₉: ½ ton Cow dung +RDF and T₁₀: 2½ ton Poultry manure + RDF. Integrated use of cow dung and chemical fertilizer performed better than integrated poultry manure and chemical fertilizer application. Highest plant height (3.20m), base diameter (17.65mm), fibre yield (3.50 tha^-1) and stick yield (5.85 tha^-1) were found with the integrated treatment T₅. Significant yield increase of fibre (15.50%) and highest organic matter increase (12.5%) in post harvest soil over recommended dose of fertilizer application was recorded in the treatment T₅ where used 50% reduced chemical fertilizer. Highest gross margin (41219/-) and benefit cost ratio (1.48) were achieved with T₅ treatment. Study indicates cow dung @ 5t/ha with 50% recommended dose of fertilizer urges the growth, yield of jute and enhance the soil organic matter. It is therefore suggested to use integrated organic and chemical fertilizer for higher crop production and soil fertility.

Objectives:

1. To find out comparatively better organic matter source and effective combination with chemical fertilizer for production of jute fibre.

2. To obtain substitute of the chemical fertilizers through organic matter use in jute cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with the jute variety 0-72 at Jute Agriculture Experiment Station, Manikganj under AEZ no. 8 (Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplain) during 2007-08. It was laid out in randomized block design having three replications. Unit plot size was 3.0m x 3.0m. Space between plots, block and around the field was one meter. The treatments were used in the experiment are mentioned. Decomposed cow dung and poultry manure were incorporated to the soil before 15 days of sowing as per treatment. The nutritional status of organic sources used in this experiment as fertilizer was presented. All the soil, plant samples and data were collected, processed and analyzed following respective standard procedures and or methods.

Finally it may be concluded that to increase jute production in our limited land resources and to improve soil health, integrated nutrients may be remunerative in context of Bangladesh.
