Response of Hybrid and Local Varieties of Sunflower to Spacing and Fertilizer Levels

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of plant population and fertilizer level on the performance of two sunflower varieties viz. Hysan-55 (hybrid) was lowest seed yield (2.49 l/ha) with the closest plant spacing (50 x 20 cm). Among the fertility levels, recommended rate (medium dose) produced the highest seed yield (12.90 t/ha). Interaction of variety and fertilizer levels has increased the seed yield for both varieties favorably up to the medium dose of fertilizers and declined thereafter while the stover yield followed the increasing trend with higher doses of fertilizers for both varieties.

Objectives:

To study the effect of plant population and fertilizer rate on the yield and yield parameters of local and hybrid varieties of sunflower.

Methodology:

The performance of two sunflower varieties under a variable range of plant population with different rates of NPK was studied during the period from November 1995 through May 1996 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agncultural Untverstty, Mymensingh. The experiment comprised two varieties' viz. hybrid variety Hysan-55 (V1) and local variety Kironi (V2). three plant spacing viz. 30 cm (S1 ) . 25 cm (S2) and 20 cm (S3) and four NPK. fertilizer levels viz. control ( F0), 66.6% of the recommended dose (low; F1) , 100% of the recommended dose (medium; F 2 ) and 1 33. 3% of the recommended dose (high; F3). Line to line spacing was fixed (50 cm) The recommended rates of N, P and K for sunflower crop for the site under consideration are 140, 1 08 and 102 kg/ha for hybrid (Hysan-55) variety and 101, 109 and 81 kg/ha in local variety (Kironi), respectively (BARC, 1997). Other fertilizers such as sulphur and zinc were given as per the recommendation. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The whole amount of sulphur, zinc, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and 50% of the urea were applied in the soil at the time of final land preparation. The rest of the urea was applied in two installments, 50% at 25 days after seed germination and the remaining at 45 days after seed germination. After final land preparation seeds were sown in 2. 5 cm deep furrows in soil in a good tilth condition, which ensured satisfactory germination. Inter cultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crops were harvested at maturity and data on yield parameters were collected from the sample plants per plot. Plot -wise seed yield and plant dry matter (stover yield) were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The result of the study indicated that the hybrid variety Hysan-55 is a better variety than Kironi in terms of yield performance. Also, Hysan-55 grown with medium dose of fertilizer level and 50 cm x 20 cm spacing gives the highest seed yield.
