Study on the Growth and Yield of Ginger in Different Nitches

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogra to scientifically validate the farmer's old-days belief of ginger adaptability to shade condition. The study results revealed that among the different tested types and degrees of shade imparted for ginger growing, the best performing one was cucurbit trailees with intermittent light and shade that gave significantly higher ginger yield (15.1 t/ha) , followed by dhaincha, jackfruit and cinnamon shade (10.0-11.0 t/ha), respectively. However, in terms of ginger yield with PAR incident on ginger leaves was found positively related. While, observed water use and transpiration rate was moderately associated with yield. But, the data on CO₂ use and photosynthetic rate at one month's interval could not explain the attained yield. It might be due to higher photosynthetic efficiency of ginger besides its longer field duration, needs frequent data collection. In case of yields correlation with traits, creeper trailees shade had also shown positive association of tillers and leaves per clump and of leaf area with ginger yield.

Objectives:

To see the performance of ginger evaluated under different light intensities received from shade plants compare to open sunny place.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogra during April 2009- February 2010. BARI Adda-1 was the test crop grown under the shade of five different plants viz. bayleaf, cinnamon, jackfruit garden, under dhaincha and creeper vegetable including open sunny place (control). In each shade type five different spots were randomly selected and tagged as replication. Again in each spot five plants were tagged as sample plant for data collection (representative of population). Different types of shade was chosen to cover a broad range of canopy structure for proper representation of the studied objective. Land under shade plants were prepared by spading/power tiller as and where possible, and was fertilized at the rate of 5 ton cow dung, 267- 111-3-116.5 kg TSP, gypsum, zinc and MP per hectare at the time of final land preparation on 5 April 2009. Ginger was planted at a spacing of 50cm x 25cm on 6 and 7 April 2009. Half urea (152kg/ha) was top dressed on 17 June, 2009 (50 DAP), followed by 76 and 58 kg urea and MP/ ha was applied in the plot on 17 July and 17 August 2009 at each application. Weeding and irrigation was applied based on soil and plant needs. Ridomil Gold MZ68WG, Lorsban l0G, and Ripcord 10EC schedule spray was made to prevent rhizome rot. Crop was harvested in different times of February 2010. A portable leaf area meter was used to measure the leaf area of sample plants. While, data of different agronomic traits like plant height, tiller/clump, leaves/clump, yield were measured by simple counting and on different physiological traits like use of H₂O, CO₂ by plants, transpiration rate, PAR incident on leaf surface (ginger) and photosynthetic rate were measured from 12.00 noon to 14.00 pm using a portable photosynthesis system (model. Man- LCI. ADC Bio-Scientific LTD, UK). Data recorded in the photosynthetic system were transferred directly to a computer.

Achievement/Findings:

Intermittent shading and light in trailee's of creeper crops can give higher yield of intercrop ginger compare to any other shade or in open sunny place due to better utilization of light and applied resources (fertilizer and water) in intercrop culture. It may be conclude that three traits like tillers and leaves/clump, leaf area should be given priority for getting higher yield while selecting a variety of ginger.
