Effect of Variety and Fertilizer Doses on Feeding and Oviposition of Brown Planthopper Nilaparvata Lugens Stal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Feeding and oviposition of the brown planthopper (BPH) were studied in susceptible and resistant rice verities receiving different fertilizer doses in pot experiments in the green house of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute in 1994. BPH was found to lay 3-4 times more eggs and excrete 4-5 times more honeydew in the susceptible variety TN1 than in resistant varieties BR31 and T27A. This indicated an adverse effect of varietal resistance on BPH feeding and oviposition. Feeding and oviposition of BPH was not affected by higher doses of fertilizers either in resistant or in susceptible variety

Objectives:

To study the integrated effect of variety with different levels of resistance and different fertilizer doses on feeding and oviposition of BPH.

Methodology:

Pot experiments were conducted in the greenhouse at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur in 1994 to study the feeding and oviposition behaviour of BPH in susceptible and resistant rice varieties receiving different fertilizer treatments. A stock culture of brown planthopper was maintained in the greenhouse at 32°C and 70% relative humidity on BR3 plants to ensure continuous supply of BPH for the experiment. One susceptible (Tai chung native 1) and two resistant varieties (BR31 and T27A) of rice were used and five doses of fertilizer viz., N₀P₀K₀S₀, N₆₀P₁₀K₂₀S₅, N₁₈₀P₃₀K₆₀S₁₀, N₂₄₀P₄₀K₈₀S₁₅ and N₂₄₀P_oK_oS_o kg/ha were selected for the experiment. Two kg of dry soil was taken in each earthen pot (14 cm diameter, 15 cm height). Half of the N fertilizer (in the form of urea) and the whole of P (in the form of TSP), K (in the form of MP) and S (in the form of gypsum) were mixed with the soil for each of the 5 treatments during pot preparation. the remaining half of N was applied as top dressing in the pot soil when the plants were 30-day-old. Pregermination seeds of the three rice varieties were sown in wooden seed boxes. Ten days after seeding, two seedlings of each variety were transplanted in each of the earthen pots filled with the prepared soil. The pots were placed under natural condition in the field. Regular watering and weeding were done as and when necessary for optimum growth of the plants. Each potted plant served as an experimental unit.

Achievement/Findings:

No significant effects of fertilizer was observed on the total number of eggs laid. Although the highest number of egg mass (72) was laid on plants received fertilizer doses of N₁₈₀P₃₀K₆₀S₁₀, the number of eggs laid was always higher in the susceptible variety in all the fertilizer treatments. The results therefore showed that the fecundity of BPH on susceptible and resistant varieties was not affected by fertilizer doses. This might be due to the small amount of fertilizer applied in small quantity .
