Seven separate field experiments were carried out at the charland of the Padma River under Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia district, of the Jhenai River under sadar upazila in Jamalpur district and of the Jamuna River under Bhuapur in Tangail district during the period from 2007 to 2010 to select the high yielding and well adaptive varieties of mustard/ rapeseed, mungbean, hybrid maize, soybean, lentil, sesame and ground nut. In first experiment four HYV mustard/ rapeseed varieties viz., BAR! Sarisha 9, BARI Sarisha 11, BAR! Sarisha 14 and BARI Sarisha 15 were tested against improved Tori 7. Four high yielding mungbean varieties viz., BARI Mung 2, BARI Mung 4, BARI Mung 5 and BARI Mung 6 were compared in second experiment. In third experiment four hybrid maize varieties viz., BARI Hybrid maize 3, BARI Hybrid maize 5, BARI Hybrid maize 7 and Pacific 11 were tested. BARI developed three soybean varieties viz., Bangladesh Soybean 4, BARI Soybean 5 and Shohag were compared in fourth experiment. In fifth experiment four high yielding lentil varieties viz. BARI Masur 3, BARI Masur 4, BARI Masur 5 and BARI Masur 6 were compared with a local variety. In the sixth experiment three BARI developed sesame varieties viz., BARI Til 2, BARI Til 3, BAR! Til 4 (Atshira) were compared with local variety. In the seventh experiment four ground nut varieties viz., BAR! Cheenabadam 5, BARI Cheenabadam 6, BARI Cheenabadarn 7 and BARI Cheenabadam 8 were tested against Dhaka 1 (local variety)-. BARI Sarisha .11 of rapeseed mnstard, BARI Mung 6 of mungbean, BARI Hybrid maize 7 of hybrid maize, BARI Soybean 5 and Shohag of soybean, BARI Masur 3 and BARI Masur 6 of lentil, BAR! Til 4 of sesame. BARI Cheenabadam 6, BARI Cheenabadam 7 and BARI Cheenabadam 8 of groundnut exhibited their superiority in respect of yield and yield attributes compared to locally available varieties of the respective crops. Based on two years study the farmers may be suggested to cultivate the aforesaid varieties of respective crops at the char areas of the Padma River (AEZ- IIl, of the Jamuna River (AEZ-9 ) and of Jhenai River (AEZ- 8) for getting higher productivity.

To find out high yielding and well adaptive varieties of different crops.

Seven separate field experiments were conducted at the charland of the Padma River under Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia (AEZ-ll), of Jhenai River under sadar upazila in Jamalpur (AEZ-9) and of the Jamuna River under Bhuapur in Tangail (AEZ- 8) district during 2007 to 2010. The soil of the experimental fields was silty loam in texture with pH 6.9 to 7.3 and containing 0.51-0.73% organic matter, 0.0329-0.067% total nitrogen, 4.32-5.66 g/ml available phosphorus, 0.15-0.18 meg/ l00g soil exchangeable potassium, 5.10-15.46 g/ml available sulphur and 0.25-0.29 g/ml available boron. Each experiment was laid out in RCB design with 4 replications. The unit plot size of all the experiments was 4 m x 5 m. Fertlizers were applied in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid. Four HYV mustard/ rapeseed varieties viz., BARI Sarisha 9 (Brassica campestris, rapeseed), BARI Sarisha 11 (B. juncea, mustard), BARI Sarisha 14 (B. campestris, rapeseed) and BARI Sarisha 15 (B. campestris, rapeseed) were tested against improved Tori 7 (local variety) (B. campestris, rapeseed) at the charland of Kushtia during rabi seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09. Four hybrid maize varieties viz. BARI-Hybrid maize 3, BARI Hybrid maize 5, BARI Hybrid maize 7 and Pacific 11 were evaluated at the charland of Kushtia during rabi seasons of 2008-09 and 2009-10. Seeds were sown on 27 November in 2008 and 12 November in 2009. Three BARI developed Til varieties viz: BARI Til 2, BARI Til 3, BARI Til 4 (Atshira) were compared with respective local variety at the charland of Kushtia and T angail during kharif 1 seasons of 2010 and 2011. Seeds were sown on February 22,2010 at Kushtia char and on April 10, 2010 at Tangail char with a spacing of 30 cm x 10 cm. Fertilizers were applied @ 58-30-25- 20-1 kg ha-1 of of NPKSZn as basal. Data on plant population per square metre were recorded from randomly selected three places and yield contributing characters from randomly selected 5-10 plants in each plot. Yield was taken from whole plot. Collected data of each experiment were analyzed following MSTATC programme and means were adjudged by LSD test at 5% level of significance.
