Effect of Water Stress on Different Reproductive Stages of Aman Rice Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in pots with rice mutants Y-1281, RD-21M and THDB at the Crop Physiology Division of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh. Control (100% FC), stress (40% FC) at booting, flowering and grain tilling stages were imposed. The experimental results exerted comparative performance of three Aman rice mutants under water stress al different reproductive stages. The mutant THDIB produced the highest number of panicles hill^-1, length of panicle, 1000-grain weight, total dry matter, grain yield and harvest index, higher number of filled grains and the fewest number of unfilled grains panicle^-1 . The mutant Y-1281 showed the highest plant height and the lowest 1000-grain weight, total dry matter and grain yield. The mutant RD-21M produced the shortest plants with the highest number of unfilled grains, medium 1000-grain weight, total dry matter and grain yield. Stress at booting was found most critical. The mutant THDB sowed some tolerance to water stress and may be used for further development of a variety for drought affected areas of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to identify the sensitive growth stage of Aman rice mutants to water stress and to find out stress tolerant mutant.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh to assess the effect of water stress on different reproductive stages of rice mutants during 13 August to 13 December. Three Aman rice mutants namely Y-1281, RD-21 M and THDB were evaluated under stress (40% PC) at booting, flowering and grain filling stages with a control (100% FC). Soils were fertilizer with cowdung 40 g/pot, urea 1.72 g/pot, TSP 1.44 g/pot, MP 0.8 g/pot corresponding to 15 ton cowdung/ha, 215 kg urea/ha, 180 kg TSP/ha and 100 kg MP/ha. Data were recorded on the following crop characters: Plant height (cm), number of panicles hill^-1, panicle length (cm), number of filled grains panicle^-1, number of unfilled grains panicle^-1, 1000-grain weight (g), total dry matter hill^-1 (g), yield hill^-1 and Harvest index. Leaf samples were collected at booting stage after the imposition of stress treatments. Chlorophyll was estimated following the procedure of Arnon (l975).The collected data were analyzed statistically following two factorial experiments in RCBD with the help of MSTAT computer packages (Russell, 1986).The mean differences were compared by Duncan's Multiples Range Test (DMRT) at 5 level of significance.
