Effect of Soil Moisture Levels on Growth and Yield of Winter Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh to assess the effect of soil moisture levels on winter mungbeans during 10 September to 21 November of 2002. Three soil moisture levels; 70, 50 and 30% FC (Field capacity) and three mungbean varieties; Binamoog-4, Barimoog-3 and Barimoog-5 were included in the experiment. Plant height, number of primary and secondary branches, leaves, leaf area, pods per plant, number of grains per pod, 1000-grain weight, grain yield per plant, total dry matter per plant and harvest index (HI) were the highest in 70% FC and those were decreased with the decrease of soil moisture levels. Among the varieties, Binamoog-4 showed the best performance on almost all the parameters, Barimoog-5 was intermediate and Barimoog-3 showed less tolerance to soil moisture stress condition.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effects of water stress on mungbean genotypes and to identify stress tolerant genotype.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in plastic pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during 10 September to 21 November of 2002. The soil was- sandy loam in texture having pH 6.8. A total of 81 pots were prepared with 4 kg soils in each pot and were placed under polyethylene sheet. 0.11 g Urea, 0.20 g TSP and 0.12 g MP were incorporated with the soil media in each pot thoroughly to apply N, P₂O₅ and K₂O @ 25-48-36 kg per hectare. Seeds of three mungbean varieties namely Binamoog-4, Barimoog-3 and Barimoog-5 were sown on 10 September of 2002. The soil moisture levels were T₁-70% FC, T₂-50% FC and T₃ -30% FC. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Field capacity of the soils used in the experiment was measured following gravimetric method. These stress treatments were applied at 21 days after sowing and continued up to maturity. All the plants of 27 pots (3 moisture levels x 3 varieties x 3 replications) were harvested at 35, 45 days after sowing (DAS) and at maturity. The date of harvest at maturity was determined when 70-80 of the pods became green to brown color. Plant height, number of primary branches, leaves and total dry matter per plant were recorded at 35, 45 DAS and maturity and number of secondary branches and leaf area per plant were recorded at 35 and 45 DAS. Number of pods, pod length and breath, number of seeds per pod, 1000-grain weight, grain yield per plant and harvest index was also recorded at maturity. The collected data were analyzed with statistical program MSTAT-C of Freed (1992). The mean differences were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5 level of significance (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Morpho-physiological parameters of mungbean genotypes such as plant height, number of primary and secondary branches, leaves, leaf area, pods per plant, number of grains per pod, 1000-grain weight, grain yield per plant, total dry matter per plant and harvest index (HI) were the highest in 70% FC and those were decreased with the decrease of soil moisture levels. Among the varieties, Binamoog-4 showed the best performance on almost all the parameters, Barimoog-5 was intermediate and Barimoog-3 showed less tolerance to soil moisture stress condition.
