Effects of Datura Alkaloids and Gamma Radiation on Morphological Features and Yield of Summer Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May 2006 to assess the effects of different doses of datura alkaloids and gamma radiation on germination, growth and yield attributes of tomato genotype, CLN-2413. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment comprised 5 treatments viz., control (no application of datura alkaliods or gamma radiation), 6-hour seed soaking in datura extract (6-hr SSDE), 12-hr SSDE, 18-hr SSDE and 200 Gray gamma radiation. Different doses of datura alkaloids and gamma radiation had significant effect on seed germination, survival percentage, height of seedling, fresh weight of seedling, plant height, individual fruit weight, fruit yield plant^-1 and fruit yield of tomato genotype. Six hour soaking of tomato seeds in datura extract was the optimum dose for increasing yield.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effects of different doses of datura alkaloids and gamma radiation on germination, growth and yield attributes of tomato and to find out optimum dose for increasing yield.

Methodology:

The research work was conducted at the experimental field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during the period from February to May 2006 to evaluate the effect of different doses of datura alkaloids and gamma radiation on germination, growth and yield attributes of tomato genotypes, CLN-2413. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The experiment comprised 5 treatments viz., control (no application of datura alkaliods or gamma radiation), 6 hour seed soaking in datura extract (6-hr SSDE), 12-hr SSDE, 18-hr SSDE and 200 Gray (Gy) gamma radiation. Ten gram dry seeds of datura were ground and mixed with 2 litre distilled water in a beaker (datura seed:water=l:200). Heat (45^oC) was imposed keeping the beaker in a water bath until soap-like bubble appeared on the water table of the beaker. Then the beaker was kept at room temperature and the extract was suitable for use. Triple super phosphate (TSP and Muriate of Potash (MP) at the rate of 12.28, 12.06 and 13.58 kg plot^-1 corresponding to 226, 222 and 250 kg ha^-1, respectively. The seeds were sown on 1 February 2006 and 30 day-old seedlings were transplanted on 2 March 2006. Different intercultural operations were accomplished for better growth and development of the seedlings in the seedbeds and plots. Total number of plots was 15 and unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Data on seed germination, survival percentage at 15 days after sowing, height and fresh weight of seedlings were recorded. At maturity, data on plant height, number of branch plant^-1, number of fruits plant^-1, individual fruit weight, fruit yield plant^-1 and fruit yield per plot were also recorded. Data were analyzed statistically. The mean separation was done by DMRT.
