Effects of Waterlogging Period on Morphological Attributes and Yield of Sesame

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May, 2005 to study the effect of waterlogging on morphological attributes and yield of sesame. Different waterlogging period of 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 hours were applied with a control (no waterlogging). Sesame genotypes viz. BINA til-1, SM-1, SM-5, SM-12 and SM-13 were used. The results revealed that number of capsule, seed yield, total dry matter per plant and harvest index were the highest in control and the lowest at 48 hour waterlogging period. All those parameters decreased, with the increase in water logging period. It also affected plant height and 1000-grain weight. The highest seed yield and total dry matter were found in Bina til-1 and SM-1, respectively. SM-5 produced the lowest TDM. SM-12 gave the lowest seed yield and harvest index. SM-13 exhibited medium yield performance under the treatments.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of waterlogging on morphological attributes and yield of sesame genotypes and to find out the genotype tolerant to waterlogging.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in plastic pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during February to May, 2005. The soil was sandy loam in texture having a pH 6.8. The collected soil was dried in the sun. Dry soil was thoroughly mixed with cowdung and fertilizers before pot filling. A total of 45 pots were prepared with 7.5 kg soils in each pot and were placed under polyethylene sheet. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 0.31,0.37, 0.123 MP and 0.31 g zypsum in each pot to maintain the doses of 125, 150, 50 and 125 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP and zypsum, respectively. Five genotypes of sesame namely BINA til-1, SM-1, SM-5, SM-12 and SM-13 were used. Sesame seeds were sown in pots on 22 February, 2005. Several seeds were sown in each pot. Finally only one plant was kept per pot. Treatments of 6 waterlogging periods were applied 45 days after sowing. These were To: Control (no water logging), T₁: Water logging of 24 hours, T₂: Water logging of 30 hours, T₃: Water logging of 36 hours, T₄: Water logging of 42 hours and T₅: Water logging of 48 hours. Data were collected on morphological attributes and yield at maturity. Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program of Russell (1986). Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to compare the differences of means.
