Effect of Water Stress on Morpho-physiological Attributes and Yield of Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh during February to May, 2005 to study the effect of water stress on morpho-physiological attributes and yield of mungbean. Soil moisture levels viz., 70, 50 and 30% field capacity and mungbean genotypes viz., Binamoog-2, MBM-298, MBM-300, E₄I-901 and E₄I-915 were used. The results indicated that plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, leaf area per plant, total leaf chlorophyll, number of pods, number of seeds per plant, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, total dry matter per plant and harvest index were the highest and total and reducing sugar contents in leaves were the lowest in 70% FC. All those parameters decreased and total sugar and reducing sugar content increased with the decrease in soil moisture levels except number of pods and total dry matter which decreased similarly at 50 and 30% FC. The genotype E₄I-915 showed the best performance while MBM-300 showed the lowest values in almost all the parameters under the' treatments. Other genotypes showed medium performance.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to assess the effects of water stress on morpho-physiological attributes and yield of mungbean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in plastic pots at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh during February to May, 2005. The soil was sandy loam in texture having pH 6.8. The collected soil was dried in the sun. Dry soil was thoroughly mixed with cowdung and fertilizers before pot filling. A total of 90 pots were prepared with 9 kg soils in each pot and were placed under polyethylene sheet. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Cowdung, urea, TSP. and MP were applied at the rate of 8.4 g, 0.09 g, 0.051 g and 0.105 g in each pot to maintain the doses of 1200, 30, 17 and 35 kg/ha of cowdung, urea, P₂O₅ and K₂O, respectively. Mungbean seeds were sown in pots on 14 February, 2005. Several seeds were sown in each pot. Three plants were kept per pot. Field capacity of soils in the experiment was determined through gravimetric method. The amount of water in the field capacity (100% FC) was multiplied by 0.70, 0.50 and 0.30 to maintain 70, 50 and 30% FC, respectively. The treatments were applied at 30 days of sowing and continued up to maturity. Data were collected on morpho-physiological attributes at 50 DAS and yield and yield attributes at maturity. Total chlorophyll, sugar, nitrogen and reducing sugar content in leaves were estimated following Amon (1949), Dubois et al. (1956), Somogyi (1952) and Nelson (1944). Data were analyzed statistically to find out the levels of significance using the MSTAT-C package program of Russell (1986). Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to compare the differences among the means.
