Status of fuel wood production

Population and income are considered as the major factors influencing the consumption and production of wood. In case of fuel wood  an increase in income tends to lower consumption  in developing countries.Extraction of  fuel wood of the Sundarbans  is undertaken on a seasonal permit basis. The private  contractors and the control of FD complete the entire harvesting and transportation. The fire wood trees are not marked by the FD but selected and cut by the contractors as per prescribed  instruction of the FD. The cutters after getting permits from the FD  go independently to the area for harvest. Similar systems are followed for all fuel wood species. Goran is a prolific  and unique small tree which is extensively used for fire wood. The tree rarely reaches 15 cm. in diameter and grows grows abundantly in western part  and all over the Sundarbans more or less. It is a super quality fire wood and burns with little smoke. Previously it was valued as charcoal until the government banned its use for the purpose.Goran is harvested in so-called Goran coups. A 20year cutting cycle is used. Goran permits are issued on a first-come-first served basis. A Goran permit holder assembles a team of about 10 laborers who stay in the forest for a month or more while felling and loading the Goran on the boats. For the period 1991-1996, officially reported Goran harvests are averaging at 56,200 metric tons per year with the last 3 years averaging 62,400 indicating an increasing trend.Crown volume (brushwood) from the non-merchantable tops and branches of the timber-producing species may be determined from crown volume ratios generated from the ODA and FRMP inventories as well as accompanying tree volume studies. For the purpose of estimating this resource,

Depending on the field experience and reviewing literatures the assignment was prepared and presented in the seminar for generating information  about the large or small scale utility of the Sundarbans resources and the Mangrove tree Species of Bangladesh that forms  energy. The evaluation and overview approach used in this paper for estimating benefits and returns of the Sundarbans fuel wood and overall fuel wood sector. It follows the evaluation approaches to the basic information towards the Sundarbans and fuel wood perspective. The assignment in this paper is based on information obtained through desk studies, literature reviews, library works, a number of expert consultants, related personnel and long term field experience. Overall fuel wood condition, demand- supply  evaluation, Sundarbans fuel wood management policy, structural  productivity, economic evaluation and incidental information are included.

The Sundarbans is as it were a "Fuel House " of Bangladesh. It provides a large scale fire wood that meet their quality expectation and consumers satisfaction. In the Sundarbans it will improve the public image to extract, utilization, storage and marketing to introduce new issues for considering the continual improvement of management strategy. Because of banned extraction of some fuel wood species. For this management policy must be changed to fulfill the demand and to rescue the homestead forest and tree species. Definitely it is true that there are many bigger tree species as like as baen and keora are being retained without harvesting in the Sundarbans. This a great loss in our national economy. Therefore, harvesting policy of the fuel wood should be changed.Mangrove tree species (keora Sonneratia apetalla, Baen Avicennia officinalis, singra Synometra ramiflora, sundri Heritiera fomes, gewa Excoecaria agallocha, jana Rhizophora  mucronata, goran Ceriops decandra, khalshi Aegiceras corniculatum etc.) of Bangladesh can contribute a long term energy value towards the communities and the country. The species specially utilized for cooking, brick burning and other multipurpose industrialization. The approaches and importance of mangrove tree species can represent some rehabilitating and some social and economic progress by producing and conserving sustainability through optimum strategies of application of the important artificial and natural mangrove plant species of Bangladesh.
