Larval Development and Survivability of Bull Frog Fry, Rana Tigrina Daudin

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Larval development and survivability of bull frog (Rana tigrina) fry in glass aquaria in the laboratory condition, cisterns in the open sky and floating cases in an earthen pond were tested in a 75 day long experiment. The average hatching time and hatching rate were 30.30 hours and 80.50%, respectively. The growth rate of bull frog fry was slightly better in floating cages than cisterns and glass aquaria. In all cases the growth performance was recorded better at lower densities. The mortality was very low at lower densities than that of higher densities. Cannibalism was observed at higher densities, however it was absent at lower densities. The length of larval period was less at lower densities and subsequently increased at higher densities. Tail absorption started after the formation of fore limbs and completed within 6-7 days. Mortality was high at the end of the second phase of metamorphosis. Tadpoles showed omnivorous in food habits.The tadpoles (average length-25 mm) were reared at four different densities ( 142, 284, 568 and 1136 tadpoles /m²) with three replicates. They were fed with a mixture of fish meal (50%) wheat bran (25%) and rice bran (25%) at a rate of 5% of body weight twice daily. Water was changed daily to remove the left-over feed and other wastes. These tadpoles were reared for better expression. First phase of metamorphosis- from tadpoles to fore limbs stage and second phase of metamorphosis from fore limbs stage to young frog without tail. In the similar way tadpoles also were reared in cistern and floating cages. Data was analysed with a statistical package called statgraphic version 7 .

Objectives:

To study the hatching, mortality and growth rate of Raga tigrina tadpoles at different phases of metamorphosis and densities in the laboratory and outdoor conditions.
To study the larval period of Raga tigrina in the laboratory and in out-door condition.

Methodology:

Fertilized egg masses of Raga tigrina were collected from the pond besides the Faculty of Agriculture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Fertilized eggs were kept in different trays and placed in the laboratory (26-28⁰C) and under the sun (27 - 32⁰C) to study the effect of temperature upon hatching time and hatching rate of eggs. After the completion of yolk sac absorption (46-48 hrs), the tadpoles were given powder milk as artificial feed tor three days. Then they were provided with a ration of prepared feed (fish meal, wheat flour and rice bran at the ratio of 1:1 : 1) twice daily at 5% of body weigh, first in the morning and second in the evening.
