Morpho-physiological Studies of Crops for Higher Yield and Quality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two advanced mutants, KD₅-18-150 and RM-100-16 along with a check variety, BRRI dhan34 were evaluated at farmers fields and BINA sub-stations; Ishurdi, Rangpur, Magura, Comilla, Jamalpur and Mymensingh for their yield performance during aman season season, 2011- 2013. The experiments were conducted following randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size of each experiment was 8m x 6m. At harvest, 10 hills plot^-1 were randomly selected for collecting data on yield and yielding contributing characters. Grain yield plot^-1 was finally converted into tons ha^-1. Forty seven lentil mutants were evaluated a BINA farm, Magura and Ishurdi during winter season of 2012-13 and 2013-14. Out of forty seven lentil mutants eight mutants viz., N₁I-123, N₂I-206, E₃I-803 and E₄I-723, N₄M-540, E₃I-316 and E₄M-819 were found promising in seed yield. Two experiments with mungbean mutants did not show promising result.

Objectives:

The objectives of the project were to assess the qualities of rice, groundnut, lentil and mungbean varieties/mutants developed at BINA from architectural, physiological and bio-chemical point of view to suggest criteria for further improvements.

Methodology:

Two advanced mutants, KD₅-18-150 and RM-100-16 along with a check variety, BRRI dhan34 were evaluated at farmers fields and BINA sub-stations; Ishurdi, Rangpur, Magura, Comilla, Jamalpur and Mymensingh for their yield performance during aman season season, 2011- 2013. The experiments were conducted following randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size of each experiment was 8m x 6m. Fertilizers such as urea, TSP and MP were applied at the rate of 180, 150 and 120 kg ha^-1, respectively. Transplanting was done with 25-day-old seedlings having the spacing of 20 cm × 15 cm. Normal weeding and other cultural practices were done as and when necessary. At harvest, 10 hills plot^-1 were randomly selected for collecting data on yield and yielding contributing characters. Grain yield plot^-1 was finally converted into tons ha^-1.

Forty seven lentil mutants were screened during winter season of 2012-13 and 2013-14 at BINA farm, Magura and Ishurdi. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 30 cm and 5-7 cm, respectively. Data on morphological and yield attributes were recorded at harvest from 10 randomly selected plants in each plot and seed yield was taken from the whole plot and converted into kg ha^-1.

The experiments of mungbean were conducted at three locations viz., BINA sub-stations: Ishurdi, Magura and Jamalpur during the period from February to May 2012 and 2013.The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3 m × 3 m. Data on morphological and yield attributes were recorded at harvest from 10 randomly selected plants in each plot and seed yield was taken from the whole plot and converted into kg ha^-1.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the grain yield over locations, KD₅-18-150 had the highest grain yield at all the locations. The second highest grain yield was recorded in RM-100-16 at most of the locations. On the other hand, BRRI dhan34 showed the lowest grain yield at all the locations. The mutant KD₅-18-150 was released as Binadhan-13 by National Seed Board on 26 August, 2013. Out of forty seven lentil mutants eight mutants viz., N₁I-123, N₂I-206, E₃I-803 and E₄I-723, N₄M-540, E₃I-316 and E₄M-819 were found promising in seed yield. But evaluation of eight mungbean mutants did not show promising yield.
