Shattering Resistance in B. Campestris, B. Juncea and B. Napus, Variation and Character Association

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genotypes Tori-7 and Sampad of B. campestris, Shambal and BAU-M/7 of B. juncea, Nap-3, Nap-3142 and Nap-8509 of B. napus were tested in the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU, Mymensingh during the rabi season of 1993-94 to investigate the variations of fruit shattering and relationship of shattering with other characters. The genotypes were grown providing normal production conditions in two planting dates. Shattering of fruit s were counted on the date of harvesting and 15 days after harvest. On an average, the genotypes of B. campestris, B. juncea and B. napus showed 1.01, 0.86 and 8.91% fruit shattering, respectively. Individually the genotypes Shambal and Nap-85 09 showed respectively the minimum (0.83%) and the maximum ( 1 2. 68 %) fruit shattering. The results suggested that the genotypes of B. napus were shattering susceptible; while those of B. campestris and B. juncea were somewhat resistant. No significant association of shattering with other characters was found except in Nap-3142 where siliqua density positively and significantly associated with shattering.

Objectives:

To identify the level of resistance of the existing varieties and to take necessary steps for its improvement.

Methodology:

The present experiment was conducted with seven varieties /lines of three Brassica species. These were Tori-7 and Sampad of B. campestris; Shambal and BAU-M/7 of B. juncea; Nap- 3, Nap-3142 and Nap -8509 of B. napus. These were grown during the rabi season of 1993-94 in the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The seeds were sown in two planting dates, first on 15th November and second on 25th November, 1993. This was done to characterize the materials for shattering behaviour in two planting dates . In well prepared land; Cowdung, Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate were used at the rates of 5 ton, 200 kg, 140 kg, 80 kg, 1 25 kg and 4 kg/ha, respectively. Standard cultural and management practices such as weeding, thinning, irrigation, insecticide and fungicide application were followed. At maturity, ten plants were selected at random from each plot for collecting data on plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliqua per plant, number of siliqua per 10 cm (fruit density) and siliqua length. Fruit shattering percentages of the varieties were recorded 011 the date of harvesting and 15 days after harvest. The correlation coefficients of morphological characters with shattering were analysed with the data of first planting date.
