Participatlon of Rural Youth in Selected Activities Related to Improved Winter Vegetable Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study attempted to determine i) the extent of participation of the male rural youth aged between 15-30 years in sixteen selected activities related to improved winter vegetable cultivation; ii) the ten selected characteristics of rural youth; and iii) the relationships between the selected characteristics of the rural youth and their participation in sixteen selected activities. Participation Index (PI) was developed to measure each of the sixteen activities. PI ranged from 32 to 195 against a possible range of 0 to 30.0. Nine activities had PI over 100, of them Transplanting of seedling ( 195). Nursing of Seedling ( 185) and Preparation of seedbed were the top three in rank order. Seven activities had PI below 100, of them production of vegetable seeds (32); Preservation of vegetables (36) and Purchasing of pesticides (64) were the lowest three activities in rank. Overall participation in activities revealed that more than one-half of the rural youth had moderate 52%) participation, little over one-third (34%) low, nearly one-tenth (9%) high and a negligible (5 %) no participation in activities related to improved winter vegetable cultivation. Correlation analysis revealed that among the ten selected characteristics age, agricultural knowledge, attitude towards technology had positive significant and fatalism had negative significant relationship.

Objectives:

i) To improved winter vegetable cultivation.

ii) Their selected characteristics.

iii) To explore relationships between the selected characteristics and their participation.

Methodology:

The two villages of Shahjadpur Thana under Serajganj district namely , Bariangaru and Nukali were the study area of this research. Bariangaru ( 170) and Nukali ( 190) together had 360 rural youth families (having at least one male rural youth in the age category of 15 - 30 years) with 675 male rural youth (Barianguru 333 youth and Nukali 342). In order to have a sample for this piece of research i) in the first step 30 percent rural youth families were selected by proportionate random method from each village; and ii) in the next step one male youth was selected at random from each selected family . Thus 108 rural youth constituted the sample. Data were collected through interview-schedule between 14 October-22 November, 1995.The Extent of participation in sixteen selected activities related to improved winter vegetable cultivation was the dependent variable of this piece of research. The ten selected characteristics of rur al youth namely, age, education, agricultural knowledge, training experience, organizational participation, family size of parents, f arm size of parents, family income, attitude towards technology and fatalism were the independent variables for this study .Participation of a youth in each of the sixteen selected activities related to improved winter vegetable cultivation was measured by a modified 4-point Likert type scale with responses namely regular, occasional, seldom and not at all and weights assigned for each of these responses were 3, 2, 1 and 0 respectively.Participation Index (PI) = Php X 3 + Pmp X 2 + P1P X 1 + Pnp X 0.
