A field experiment was conducted in an Old Brahmaputra Floodplain Soil at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh to see the effect of inorganic and organic sources of nitrogen and potassium on physical and chemical properties of soil under nee cropping (Var. BR11 rice). Two levels of nitrogen (50 and 100 kg N/ha) in combmation with two levels of potassium (40 and 60 kg K2 0/ha) from each of morganic and organic sources were used. Soil properties were monitored at the maximum tillering stage and after crop harvest. The inorganic sources were urea and MP for N and K, respectively, the respective organic sources being mustard oilcake and ash. Sixty kg P205/ha was applied as blanket dose from TSP. The addition of N and K from different sources did not exert significant effect on the physical properties of soil like bulk density, porosity and water holding capacity. Chemical properties like organic matter content, cation exchange capacity, total N, exchangeable K, available P and S were favorably influenced by the application of organic sources of nitrogen and potassium while the organic source mostly did not show positive effect, soil pH decreased slightly from the initial status.

To see the physical and chemical properties of soil after the applications of inorganic and organic sources of nitrogen and potassium in an old Brahmaputra Floodplain soil under rice cropping.

The field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during the aman season of 1996. The soil was silt loam in texture. BR11 rice was used as a test crop. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with nine treatments replicated thrice. The unit plots size was 5 m x 4 m. Soil samples were collected for laboratory analysis in three installments: before cropping and fertilizer application (Initial soil sample), during growth period. Total N was estimated by Kjeldahl method (Page et a!., 1982); available P (NaHC03 extractable) by standard phosphomolybdate method of (Olsen et al., 1954), exchangeable K (NH40Ac extractable) by flame photometer (Black, 1965); available S from calcium chloride extract as described by Page et al., (1982); cation exchange capacity by NH40Ac method (Black, 1965). Exchangeable Ca, Mg, magnesium, and organic matter contents were determined following the ASI method (Hunter, 1984). There were nine treatments consisting of 2 levels of N (50 and 100 kg N/ha) from 2 sources (urea and mustard oilcake) 2 levels of K (40 and 60 kg K20/ha) from 2 sources (MP and Ash) and a blanket dose@ 60 kg P205/ha from TSP. The treatment combinations were : N0K0, N50K40. N50K60. N100K40, N100N50. N50K40. N50K60. N100K40. N100K60. Urea was applied in three equal splits. The first split of urea and the full dose of TSP, MP, mustard oil cake and ash were applied at the time of final land preparation. The second split of urea was applied at maximum tillering stage and the remaining split at the panicle initiation stage as a Topdress. Irrigation and intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.

The treatments had a significant influence on the available S content in soil. initially the available S in soil was 16.0 ppm and after application of organic manures and chemical fertilizers it changed to 17.1 to 27.9 ppm at MTS and 15.7 to 20.2 ppm after harvest. The data also reveal that organic manures resulted in higher available S status compared to chemical fertilizers. It is also seen  that chemical fertilizers did not produce any noticeable effects over the initial level but a slight increase in available S was observed in the soil receiving organic sources of nitrogen and potassium. Similar results were also observed by Shaw and Robinson (1960).
