Effects of Jute-sesbania Association on Growth and Yield of Jute and Soil Properties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The jute-Sesbania association and their effects on soil properties were studied at the field laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April to August 1996 with a view to increasing jute yield as well assail fertility. Plant height, base diameter, dry matter production and yield of associated jute were significantly increased when Sesbania was harvested at 55 days after sowing and kept in between two rows of jute and decreased when both jute and Sesbania were harvested together at maturity. Organic matter as well as well as soil fertility were increased due to jute Sesbania association. Considering all the advantages, the jute-Sesbania association where Sesbania harvested at 55 days after sowing appeared to be the most appropriate.

Objectives:

To observe the adaptability of jute with Sesbania with the purpose of increasing soil fertility and at the same time maintaining usual jute yield or improvement.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the field laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh during jute growing season (April- August) of 1996. The experimental field was a medium high land belonging to the Sonatola soil series of gray floodplain soil type under the agroecological zones of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain. The soil was silty loam, imperfectly to poorly drained with slow permeability. There were three treatments in this study viz. T₀ : sole jute, T₁ : single row of jute + single row of Sesbania harvested at 55 days after sowing and kept in between two rows of jute and T₂ : single row of jute + single row of Sesbania occupied upto final harvest. The D-154 cultivar of jute (Corchorus capsularis) and Sesbania aculeata seeds were sown on April 2, 1996 in line sowing method in 5 m x 4 m plots. The experimental plots were randomly distributed in complete block design with four replications. Urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash were applied at the rate of 50, 25 and 45 kg ha^-1 respectively. Half of urea and full amount of the other fertilizers were applied one day prior to sowing and the rest urea was topdressed at 45 days after sowing (DAS). Appropriate cultural practices were done including thinning operation. With a view to measuring total, bark and stick dry matter of jute, crop harvesting, beginning from 35 DAS were carried out 10 days interval until 95 DAS, but with a 25 days interval at final harvest. The plant height, base diameter and yield of jute at final harvest were also estimated. All the plants of Sesbania under T₁ treatment were harvested at 55 DAS and kept in between two rows of jute for decomposition after measuring fresh biomass. At each harvest the jute plants of one square meter area from each plot were sampled for data collecting. The plant dry matter after being oven dried at 80°C for 48 hours was taken. Soil samples were collected three times from the experimental field. First collection was made before land preparation, second one at 70 DAS and the third one after final harvest. On the first occasion, only one soil sample was collected from whole field but on the second and third occasion, samples were collected according to the plots. Soil pH, % organic carbon, % organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and sulphur were estimated according to Black (1965). All data were compiled and analyzed statistically following the ANOVA technique and their means were separately by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.

From the results presented above in is evident that jute-Sesbania association probably T₁ might be suitable for obtaining higher jute yield as well as raising soil fertility. However, it is necessary to further study for drawing any realistic conclusion.
