Genetic Analysis in Diallel Population of Lablab Bean Treated with and Without Added Nutrients

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a diallel population of lablab bean involving six bean genotypes as parents, genetic analysis were done for eight quantitative characters. The experiment was grown in field condition following two nutritional conditions- 1) no added nutrients (F₀) and 2) with added nutrients of N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 (F₊). The Vr-Wr analyses, suggested that days to flower in this population had partial dominance in F_o and over dominance in F₊cultivation. The distribution of array points along the regression line was changed due to added nutrients. The graph showed over dominance for inflorescence/plant in both F₀ and F₊. soil conditions indicating non allelic interaction. For pods/inflorescence, the regression value indicated presence of non allelic interaction in F_o condition but not in F₊. The Vr-Wr graph indicated partial dominance in F₀ but over dominance in F+ Predominant role of additive nature of gene action was demonstrated by pod length, pod width, seeds/pod, and 20-pod weight for both F_o and F nutrient conditions. The Vr-Wr analysis for pod yield/plant indicated over dominance both in F_o and F+ conditions. For this trait the Vr-Wr analysis indicated presence of non allelic interaction and this interaction was due to the arrays with common parents DS52 and KBS1 respectively for F_oand F₊

Objectives:

The present study aims at obtaining information on the components of variation and genetic architecture through Vr-Wr analysis.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the winter 1993-95. The plant material included 6 x 6 diallel combinations excluding reciprocals. Six varieties of lablab bean (KBS1, DS52, DS106, DS112, DS161, and DS167) were selected on the basis of pod and other related characters for the study. They were intercrossed in diallel fashion excluding reciprocals in the early spring of 1993-94. Seeds of parents and 15 F₁s were sown on 1994-95 crop season. The experimental layout was a randomized complete block design with four replications. Each experimental entry was placed in a single pit of a single row in a replication. There were 21 plants of 21 pit in a replication with single row. In this study two experiments, one in which relevant plots (pits) received Triple Super Phosphate (TSP)- 30 gram (g)/pit, Muriate of Potash (MP)- 20 g/pit and Urea- 10 g/pit as a source of P₂0₅, K₂0, and N respectively. Another experiments cultivated as no added nutrients condition. Data on pod yield and its different contributing characters were obtained on 20 randomly selected green edible pods from each plant/pit in a replication. Achievement/Findings:

For pod yield/plant, the Vr-Wr analysis both F₀ and F₊ conditions suggest that simple additive dominant genetic model was not adequate because the regression coefficients deviated significantly from unity. There was strong indication of non allelic interaction in the present parental materials. By omitting one array in turn, the parents DS52 in F₀ (b = 1.33 ± .26) and KBS1 in F₊(b = 0.92 .37) were responsible for causing this interaction. Vr-Wr graphs in both the cases indicates overall over dominance. Non additive gene action was reported for number of pods/raceme, number of seeds/pod, number of inflorescence/plant and pod yield/plant , the results demonstrated that pod length, pod width, seeds/pod and pod weight had additive gene action and pods/raceme, raceme/plant and pod yield/plant showed non additive nature of gene action. To exploit the different types of gene action as revealed in the present study, bi.1parental mating between selected recombinants and mating of selected segregates between crosses in F₂ generation may prove most effective in improving the bean crop
