Intercropping of Rabi Crops with Late Jute for Seed Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at jute research sub-station, Monirampur, Jessore in 1995 to assess the feasibility and economic performance of maize, sesame and grasspea, as inter-crop with late jute for seed production. Jute + maize, jute + sesame, jute + grasspea, sole jute, sole maize, sole sesame and sole grasspea were seven treatments, laid out with randomized complete block design. The highest yield of jute seed was obtained from sole jute crop. Land equivalent ratio (LER) increased 12% to 37% over sole jute. The highest equivalent yield of jute seed (455 kg/ha) was obtained from jute + grasspea inter-cropping. This combination also gave the highest gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio.

Objectives:

The present study was, therefore, undertaken to assess the feasibility of inter-cropping of rabi crops, namely maize sesame and grasspea with jute seed crop.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Monirampur Jute research sub-station, Jessore during the year 1995 and was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were, jute + maize, jute + sesame, jute + grasspea, sole jute, sole maize, sole sesame and sole grasspea. Maize (Barnali), sesame (Local) and grasspea (Kheshari) were used as intercrop with jute (0-9897). The unite plot size was 3.3 m x 3 m. The crops were sown in rows, maintaining a spacing of 30 cm in case of sole jute, 75 em in maize, 20 cm in sesame and 15 cm in grasspea. Row spacing maintained for inter-cropping of jute+ maize was 22.5 cm, jute +sesame was 15 cm, and jute+ grasspea was 15 cm. The seed rate used for jute was 2.50 kg/ha, 30 kg/ha for maize, 8 kg/ha for sesame and 20 kg/ha for grasspea. Fertilizers were used at the rate of 222-153-20 kg/ha of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively for both of the sole and inter-crop treatments. Jute seed was sown on 25 August and, maize, sesame and grasspea were sown on October, in-between two rows of jute for the inter-crop treatments. The crops were irrigated twice i.e. at 30 and 60 days after sowing. Jute crops were infested by mite only but there was no disease attack. The crops were harvested at maturity. Achievement/Findings:

The lowest return (TK. 9,020/ha) and net return (TK. 3,320/ha) over total variable cost (TK. 5, 700/ha) were obtained in sole sesame. It was further observed that the highest yield of jute seed was obtained from sole jute and the lowest seed yield was obtained form jute + maize inter-cropping treatment. The seed yield reduction in these inter-cropping might be due to shading effect of taller crop and deletion of nutrients by inter-crop. Inter-cropping of jute seed with grasspea indicated that the productivity of jute seed would be increased up to 37% over the sole jute seed. It also indicated that by inter-cropping of jute seeds with grasspea could produce 352 kg of jute seed and 465 kg of grasspea from a hectare of land without growing these separately in 1.37 hectare of land to obtain the same yield The higher net return from inter-cropping treatments might be due to higher LER and market price of jute seed and grasspea. It reveals that suitability of grasspea as a component crop in inter-crop with late jute crop for seed production. lnter-cropping of pulse with late jute seed crop are agronomically feasible and economically profitable than the sole jute seed crop.
