Genotype-environment Interaction in Crosses of Lablab Bean for Flower Characters

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

G x E interaction was studied in three flower characters using eleven hybrid progenies and seven parental genotypes of lablab bean (Lablab purpureus) under two cultural environments - early sowing of seeds in growing pits with added nutrients as Env. 1, and relatively late sowing date and without added nutrients as Env. 2. Env. 1 required much more time to flower than Env. 2, so that Env. 1 produced higher no. of inflorescences/plant than in Env. 2. Highest no. of flowers/inflorescence were produced from DSN1 among the parental genotypes and DSN9 x KBS1 in hybrid crosses. Relative contribution of different parameters such as additive [d]. dominance [h], environment (e_j). additive x environment (g_dj) and dominance x environment (g_hj) were determined for all the characters studied. Most of the hybrids were more responsive to changes in environment than their parents for days to flowering and flowers/inflorescence.

Objectives:

To asses genotype-environment interaction in some crosses (hybrid) under two cultural environments.

Methodology:

F1 progenies of eleven crosses and their seven parental genotypes were grown at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Mymensingh. All the materials (DS106, DS112, DSN1, DSN2 and lDSN9) were collected from different parts of the country except 2, one (DS167) from Japan and another (KBS1) from a cross (local x exotic). Distances between rows and within rows in pit were 2 m. Two cultural environments were created by manipulating sowing dates and fertilizer (Env. 1 -early sowing i.e., 20 August 1996, with fertilizer at the rate of 5 g urea (46% N₂), 20 g TSP (45% P₂0₅) and 10 g MP (60% K₂0) per pit and Env. 2 -late sowing i.e., 20 September 1996, without fertilizer to the soil. Cultural practices were done as and when necessary. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with five replications. Data were recorded from all the plants of each genotype (5 plants) on days to flowering, inflorescence/plant and flowers/inflorescence. The data on these characters were analyzed following Lawrence and Jinks (1973) for estimation of g x e interaction parameters

Achievement/Findings:

On an average, genotypes in Env. 1 required 19 days more to come to flower than in Env. 2. As most of the genotypes are photoperiod sensitive and timely fixed (with exceptions of KBS1, DS167), such flowering behaviour with differential sowing dates - early with Env. 1 and late with Env. 2. could be anticipated. According to summarized mean for genotypes days to flowering ranged from 57.8 to 131.7 among the parental genotypes and from 61.7 to 106.9 in hybrid genotypes. Results on the specific performance of genotypes in each environment showed lowest days to flowing was in DS167 in Env. 2.
