A Study on the Effect of Sulphur and Sowing Dates on Yield and Yield Attributes of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of sulphur and dates of sowing on yield and yield contributing characters of two wheat varieties. Non Calcareous Dark Grey Flood Plain Soil at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm. during the rabi season of 1996-97. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design assigning the sowing dates (November 22 and 29) in the main plot. varieties and sulphur levels (0, 20, 30 and 40 kg S ha^-1) in the sub-plot having three replications. The results obtained from the study revealed that sowing dates exerted a significant effect on agronomic attributes except plant height, number of spikes/m², length of spike, grain and straw yields remained unaffected. Grain yield was found decreased progressively as the sowing was delayed. Varieties differed significantly in respect of number of spikes m^-2 , length of spikes, 1000-grain weight and straw yield. Agronomic attributes and the yield of the crop (grain and straw yields) were significantly influenced by sulphur levels. Significantly lowest grain yield was obtained from 0 kg ha^-1 but with the increase of higher concentration of sulphur, the result differed. Significant positive relationship was also noticed in most of the cases when the relationship patterns were established between yield and yield contributing characters of wheat.

Objectives:

To evaluate its effects on the yield and yield attributes of two varieties of wheat including varietal effect.

Methodology:

The field experiment of the present study was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during the period from November 1996 to March 1997 with a view to evaluating the effect of different levels of sulphur fertilizer and sowing dates on yield and yield contributing characters in two varieties of wheat. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design having sixteen treatments and three replications. The date of sowing was allocated to the randomly main plots and the combination of varieties and levels of sulphur was assigned to the sub-plots at random. The experiment comprised of four levels of sulphur (0, 20, 30 and 40 kg S ha^-1), two different dates of sowing (November 22 and 29) and two varieties (cvs. Protiva and Kanchan) of wheat giving rise to sixteen different combinations. These combinations were replicated three times. The area was first divided into three blocks. Each blocks was first divided into two main plots and each of the main plots was divided into eight sub-plots (unit plots). The treatments were randomly distributed in these whole plots and split plots. The size of each unit plot (i.e. split plot) was 5 m x 2 m. Fertilizers N, P and K were applied at the rate of 120, 80 and 60 kg ha^-1. When the plants achieved ripening stage in any plot, the crop was immediately harvested by cutting with sickles at ground level. The selected ten (10) plants in each plot were harvested separately to take necessary data for the experiment. The selected samples and plot all plants of the plots were cleaned and dried carefully upto 14% moisture content. Plant height, number of spikelets m^-2, length of spike, number of tillers plant^-1, number of effective tillers plant^-1, number of grains spike^-1, 1000-grain weight, grain and straw yields were recorded at harvest and the results were statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Number of tillers plant^-1, number of effective tillers plant^-1, number of grains spike^-1, 1000-grain weight were significantly different at different sowing dates while plant height, number of spikes m^-2, length of spike grain and straw yield remained unaffected. Number of tillers plant^-1, number of effective tillers plant^-1, number of grains spike^-1 and 1000- grain weight varied from 4.14 to 4.29, 3.45 to 3.84, 30.32 to 30.92 and 46.95 to 48.35 g, respectively. These results showed that yield and yield contributing characters of wheat slightly influenced by dates of sowing.
