Effect of Planting Date, Seedling Age and Spacing on the Yield and Yield Components of Late Transplant Aman Rice in Coastal Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Regional- Station farm, Feni during transplant.man (T. Aman) season, 1994 and 1995. Two transplanting dates (15 September and 30 September). three spacing (20 cm x 20 cm, 20 cm x 15 cm and 15 cm x 15 cm) and three seedling ages (30 days, 45 days and 60 days) were evaluated to determine the optimum planting date, seedling age and spacing to late T. aman season. The experiments were laid out in a split split-plot design with three replications. Sixty days old seedling showed better performance in respect of grain yield followed by 45 and 30 days old seedlings. Closer spacing produced higher number of panicles, higher 1000-grain weight and grain yield than wider spacing. But, grain panicle^-1 was higher in the wider spacing. All the yield components and yield were higher in the earlier plantings were, the highest grain yield in 1994 and 1995 were 3.91 and 3.87 t/ha, respectively.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum spacing, planting date and seedling age of late T. aman rice.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted at the BRRI Regional Station, Sonagazi farm, Feni during T. aman season 1994 and was repeated in 1995. The experiments were laid out in a split-split plot design with three replications. Two planting dates viz. 15 September and 30 September, three spacings, e.g. 20 cm x 20 cm, 20 cm x 15 cm and 15 cm x 15 cm, and three seedling ages i.e., 30 days, 45 days and 60 days were assigned in the main plots, sub plots and sub-sub plots, respectively. The plot size was 4m x 3m. Fertilizers were applied @ 60-40-40-10 kg N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S ha^-1 form urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. All the fertilizers and half of urea were applied at the final land preparation and the rest of the urea was top dressed in two equal splits at 20 and 35 days after transplanting (DAT). All other cultural operations were done as and when necessary. Samples for estimating yield components were taken from 10 randomly selected hills plot^-1 . Yield was estimated from samples of 5m² , taken from the middle of each unit plot and were adjusted at 14% moisture content of the grain. Data were analysed and the means were adjudged following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:

Grain yield was the highest in 15 em x 15 em spacing followed by 20 cm x 15 cm and 20 cm x 20 cm for both the years. But, there was no significant difference effect between 30 cm x 15 cm and 20 em x 20 em spacing for grain yield. The highest grain yield in 15 em x 15 em spacing might be due to higher number of panicle produced by this spacing (15 cm x 15 cm) with the same seedlings age. It was observed that early planting (15 September) gave higher yield than late plantings. The lower yield in late planting might be due to low temperature prevailed in the flowering stage average minimum temperature were 20.6°C and 13.1°C, in November and December, respectively which could hampered spikelet fertilization and grain formation. It may be concluded from this study that closer spacing (15 cm x 15 cm) and 45-60 days old seedlings are preferable for satisfactory yield for late T. aman season in the Sonagazi area, the coastal area of south-eastern part of Bangladesh.
