Weed vegetation of boro rice fields were surveyed in the village of Boira and Darivabakhali under the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (OBFP) and the Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplains (YBJFP) agro-ecological zone (AEZ), respectively. In OBFP the infesting weed species were 48 belonging to 17 families: whereas in YBJFP there were 66 species of weeds belonging to 24 families. Gramineae and Cyperaceae contributed to the maximum number of weed species and annuals outnumbered the perennials in both of the two AEZ. The most important weed species in the former AEZ was Cyperus iria whereas in the latter AEZ the most important weed species was Finbristylis miliacea. The five most important weeds of the two AEZ contributed 70.88% and 42.44% of the total relative dry weight, as against the other species which shared only 29.12 and 57.66% respectively. Co-efficient of similarity of weed vegetation between this two AEZ was 44.19% which indicates a wide range of dissimilarity between weed vegetation in the two AEZ. The study revealed .a considerable variation of the abundance, importance and ranks of weed species that grew in association with boro rice in the two AEZ.

To investigate the distribution of weed flora growing in boro rice under Old Brahmaputra Floodplain  (OBFP) and Young Brahmaputra  and Jamuna Floodplains  (YBJFP) agro-ecological  zones(AEZ) of Bangladesh.

The study was conducted in the farmers' field of Boira and Darivabakhali villages under Mymensingh district during January through May of 1992 and 1993. The villagelie under Old Brahmaputra Floodplain and Young Brahmaputra and Jamuna Floodplains agro ecological zones. respectively. Representive data on weed vegetation on two AEZs were obtained from the average value of two years. Forty eight fields from each AEZ were taken under study. The data on weed infestation that is, number of weed species and weed density were collected by using 0.25m2 quadrant from three spots in each field from the unweeded strip at the flowering stage of the rice plants as suggested by Cruz et a/.(1986). The weeds in each quadrant were uprooted, washed and sun dirled, and their weight was taken species-wise. The imprtance value {I.V.) of each species growing with the crop in each AEZ determined by the following formula: I.V. = Dry weight of each species in a community Dry weight of all the species in a community X 100 The Weed communities growing in association with the bora rice crop in two AEZ were compared on the basis of co-efficient of similarity(%) which was determined as follows (Newsome and Dix, 1968): 2w C= X 100 a+b Where, c= Co-efficient of similarity(%) of two communities w= Sum of the lower, IVs of species shared by two communities a= Sum of the I.V's of all species in the first community b= Sum of the IVs of all species in the second community Co-efficient of dissimilarity = 100- Co-efficient of similarity.
