Effect of Different Seeding Ratio on Mixed Relay Cropping of Lentil, Linseed and Mustard in Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Pabna. Performance of mixed relay cropping of lentil, linseed and mustard at varying seeding ratios in transplanted aman (T. Aman) rice (BR11) were studied in two successive rabi season of 1992- 93 and 1993-94. Yield of the individual crop was increased with the increases of its seed rate in mixed crop combinations. Sole relay cropping gave the maximum seed yield in both the years. But the highest lentil equivalent yield (1089 and 1042 kg/ha) were obtained from 75% lentil + 12.5% linseed + 12.5% mustard. Economic analysis showed that this combination has also gave the highest gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio where land equivalent ratio (LER) was also highest.

Objectives:

To find out suitable seeding ratios of lentil, linseed and mustard to relayed in T. Aman rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in Sara high land soil series of Agricultural Research Station, Pabna during the rabi season 1992 to 1993, under rainfed condition. Twelve treatments are in Table we!'e tested in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The treatments are described as follows: The unit plot size was 5 m x 4 m. Seeds of lentil, linseed and mustard were sown as relay crops in T. Aman (BR11) on November 15, 1992 and November 20, 1993. The variety used for lentil, linseed and mustard were L-5, local and Rai-5, respectively. Fertilizers (N, P₂0₅, K₂0) were applied as basal at the rate of 30-45-28 kg/ha for sole linseed, 80-60-40 kg/ha for sole mustard and 30-45-30 kg/ha for sole lentil and other relay crops. Mustard, lentil and linseed were harvested at 95, 118 and 120 days after sowing, respectively. Data on yield was analyzed statistically and mean differences were done by LSD test and land equivalent ratio (LER) was computed from the grain yield data of the crops

Achievement/Findings:

Grain yield of lentil: Grain yield of lentil increased with the increase of its seeding ratios in mixed crop treatments. The maximum grain yield of lentil (750 and 725 kg/ha) were obtained from sole lentil, when relayed in T. Aman rice and minimum (35 and 40 kg/ha) were obtained from 12.5% lentil + 75% linseed + 12.5% mustard treatment in both the years. Among the mixed crop treatments, the maximum grain yield of lentil (577 and 550 kg/ha) were obtained from 75% lentil + 12.5% linseed + 12.5% mustard treatment which were significantly higher than all ether mixed crop combinations but lower than sole lentil. The highest gross return, net return and benefit cost ratio were obtained from 75% lentil + 12.5% linseed + 12.5% mustard and the lowest were recorded in sole linseed. From the study of two years results revealed that mixed relay cropping of 75% lentil + 12.5% linseed+ 12.5% mustard in T. Aman is advantageous than sole relay cropping of any of the component crops.
