Sowing Depth and Seed Size Effect on Yield Attributes and Yield of Mungbean (vigna Radiata)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was conducted at the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka, Bangladesh during March 2007 to June 2007 to find out the influence of varying seed size and sowing depth on yield attributes and yield of mungbean. The experiment consisted of three sowing depths (2, 4 and 6 cm) and three seed sizes; small (< 3.2 mm), medium (3.2 - 4 mm) and large (> 4 mm). The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications having depth in the main plots and seed size in the sub-plots. Results showed that the sowing depth of 4 cm showed significantly the highest values in number of pods plant ^-1, number of seeds pod^-1, pod length, 1000-seed weight, seed yield and harvest index. In all the cases, significantly the lowest values were obtained with 2 cm sowing depth. The highest pod length (1015 cm), 1000- seed weight (42.67 gm) and seed yield (1.44 t ha^-1) were obtained with the largest seeds. The highest number of pods plant^-1 (13.11), number of seeds pod ^-1(9.97), pod length (10.14 cm), 1000 grain weight (43.45 g), seed yield (1.45 t ha^-1) and harvest index (25.44%) were observed in medium depth. Interaction effect of the largest seeds with medium depth showed the highest values in number of pods plant^-1(13.28), number of seeds pod (10.24), pod length (10.93 cm), 1000 seed weight (44.09 g), seed yield (1.515 ha ^-1), harvest index (15.73%) and shelling percentage (32.55%). It was concluded that the seed yield of mungbean increased with sowing seeds having seed size of > 4 mm at 4 cm depth.

Objectives:

To find out the influence of varying seed size and sowing depth on yield attributes and yield of mungbean.

Methodology:

The treatments consisted of three sowing depth; Low (2 cm = D₁), Medium (4 cm = D₂) and High ( 6 cm = D₃) and three seed sizes; Small (< 3.2 mm = S_I), Medium (32 - 4 mm = S₂) and Large (> 4 mm = D₃). The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with sowing depth in the main plot and seed sizes in the sub-plot. Each treatment was replicated three times. The size of each plot was 4m 2.4m. Block to block distance was 1 m and plot to plot distance was 0.5 m. The land was first ploughed by a tractor drawn disc plough and then was subsequently cross ploughed four times with power tiller followed by laddering. Weeds and stubbles were removed from the field. All the clods were broken into small pieces. The land was given different fertilizers at the rate of 21- 46 - 33 kg of N, P₂O₅ and K₂0 per hectare, respectively. Whole amount of Urea, TSP and MP fertilizer's were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. Seeds were graded by mashes into three sizes as per experimental treatments and were sown on 27^thMarch, 2007 by hand in line maintaining line to line distance of 30 cm and plant to plant 10 cm. Seeds were sown in furrows maintaining the depth as per treatments using a graduated (marked) dibbler. The thinning was done 15 days after sowing. Weeding was done two times; 15 and 25 days after sowing (DAS). The cutworm and hairy caterpillars were controlled by spraying Nogos and Savin - 85 SP respectively. Irrigation was given as per necessity of the crop. Pods were harvested on 9 June' 2007. Ten plants from each plot were selected at random before harvesting and were uprooted for data recording. The harvested pods were dried in sun for consecutive three days. Data were taken on number of pods plant^-1, pod length, number of seeds pod^-1, weight of 1000 seeds, seed yield, shelling percentage and harvest index. The data were statistically analyzed using the IRRISTAT computer package program. Least Significant Difference (LSD) was used to compare the mean differences among the treatments.
