Adoption of Balanced Fertilizer and Fertilizer Application Method in Potato Cultivation in a Selected Area of Jessore District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The objectives of this study were to have an understanding of the extent of adoption level of balanced fertiizer and fertilizer application method and their relationships with the nine characteristics of the potato growers. Data were collected from a sample of 104 potato growers of Haibatpur union under sadar thana of Jessore district by interview procedure during October and November, 1994. It was found that 91 percent of the growers had slightly balanced or moderately balanced adoption of fertilizers compared to 9 percent having fairly balanced adoption. None had balanced adoption. Majority of the potato growers adopted slightly to highly over doses of fertilizers with no or very low doses of organic manure. It was observed that most of the farmers followed basal and top-dress as a method or fertilizer application. Education, family size, agricultural knowledge and potato production knowledge were positive and significantly related with the balance fertilizer adoption. Both agricultural and potato production knowledge showed positive and significant relationship with the adoption of fertilizer application method.

Objectives:

To explore relationships of the characteristics of the potato growers with their adoption of balanced fertilizer and fertilizers application method.

Methodology:

Haibatpur union under sadar thana of Jessore district was the location of the study. Population of this study consisted of 513 potato growers of Haibatpur union who cultivated at least one bigha (33 decimal) potato in 1993-94 season. Two stage sampling procedure was followed in drawing the sample. There were 27 villages in the study area. Eight villages were first randomly selected out of the 27 villages, Then 20 percent of the potato growers were selected from each of the eight villages. One hundred four (104) potato growers so selected constituted the sample for this study. Data were collected from these 104 potato growers in the month of October and November, 1994 through pretested interview schedule by personal interview procedure. Different weights and scoring were developed as and when necessary with the consultation of extension and potato experts. Soil of the study area needed mostly Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate fertilizer for potato cultivation (COP, 1993). If one of these essential elements was deficient or lacking, plant would be poor even when all the other elements were abundant (BARC, 1989). In this study balanced fertilizer referred to the combination of fertilizers capable of supplying plant nutrients considering the crop plants requirement and nutrients status of soil.Descriptive and inferential statistics like frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation and simple correlation co-efficient were employed to facilitate presentation of the findings.

It is revealed from the table that almost all the respondents adopted Urea, TSP, and MP fertilizers at varying levels. Majority of the farmers did not adopt Gypsum, Zinc Sulphate fertilizer and cowdung (75, 60 and 93 percent, respectively) thought recommended. On the other hand, farmers of the study area were found to adopt over doses of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate (76, 97, 39, 11 and 40 percent, respectively). Over adoption is always undesirable, It was also observed that farmers used maximum amount of chemical fertilizers but less amount of cowdung or organic manure. It was perhaps due to lack of awareness of the farmers and shortage of cowdung. also indicated that only two characteristics namely agricultural knowledge and potato production knowledge of the potato growers were positive and significantly related with the adoption of fertilizer application method. The proper method of fertilizer application requires some knowledge on technical issues in connection with land use, yield potential of the concerned variety, different crop combinations etc. and therefore, agricultural knowledge and potato production knowledge of the farmers were found to have positive and significant relationships with the adoption of fertilizer application method. The other r.haracteristics of the farmers were not found to be related with this variable.
