Effect of Irrigation Regimes and Sulphur Levels on the Performance of Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out during December 1997 to April 1998 at Karimganj thana, Kishoreganj with a view to know the performance of groundnut cv. DG-2 due to irrigation regimes and different levels of sulphur. The experiment was carried out with two factors: i) 00 cm (no irrigation), 5 cm at 35 days after sowing (DAS) and 10 cm (5 cm at 35 DAS and 5 cm at 50 DAS) and ii) four sulphur levels i.e. 00, 20, 40 and 60 kg S ha^-1. Plant height, root length, branches plant-1, total nut plant-1. mature nut plant^-1, 1000 seed weight, nut and stover yield were significantly influenced by the application of irrigation water and sulphur levels. In respect of yield and yield contributing characters 10 cm irrigation water and 40 kg S ha^-1 treatment was the best combination.

Objectives:

To see the effect of irrigation and sulphur fertilizer and to find out the best combination of this two factors on the performance of groundnut.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Noagaon Farming Systems and Environmental studies site during 5 December 1997 to 10 April 1998 at Karimganj thana, Kishoregonj with a view to know the performance of groundnut cv. DG-2 due to irrigation regimes and different levels of sulphur. Texturally, the soil was silty loam. Three farmers fields were selected for experimentation as replication. Each main plot was splited into four equal sub-plots. The un plot size was 2.5 m X 4 m (10 sq. m). Two factors (i) 00 cm (no irrigation), 5 cm at 35 days after sowing (DAS), and 10 cm (5 cm at 35 DAS + 5 cm at 50 DAS) and (ii) four sulphur levels i.e. 0, 20, 40 and 60 kg S ha^-1, respectively, were applied in this experiment. Urea, triple superphosphate and muriate of potash were applied at the rate of 30 kg N ha^-1, 30 kg P ha^-1 and 50 kg K ha^-1, respectively (BARC, 1997). Total quantities of urea, TSP, MP and sulphur fertilizer were applied at the time of final land preparation. Irrigation treatments were given in the main plot and sulphur fertilizer were applied in the sub-plots. Data on plant height, root length, number of branches plant^-1, total number of nut plant^-1, matured nut plant-1, 100 seed weight, nut and stover yield were collected from ten randomly sampled plant. Data were analyzed following analysis of variance technique with the computer package M-stat and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

Due to application of irrigation and sulphur plant height, root length, branches plant^-1, mature nuts plant^-1, 100 seed weight, nut and Stover yield varied from 37.21 to 65.99 cm, 9.73 to 14.32 cm, 5.05 to 9. 18, 18.15 to 37.73,13.02 to 28.70, 41.14 to 47.68 g, 1.47 to 2.09 t ha^-1, and 2.20 to 3.99 t ha^-1, respectively. Total nut and mature nuts plant^-1 increased significantly by the combination of irrigation and sulphur fertilizers at 5% level of significant. In respect of yield and yield contributing characters 10 cm irrigation water and 40 kg S ha^-1, was found to be the best combination for groundnut production.
