Effect of Legume Forage (vigna Mungo) Supplementation with Rice Straw Based Diet on the Production Performance of Lactating Cows

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the Banwari Nagar village of Pabna district to study the effect of supplementation of legume forage (Vigna mungo) in straw based diet on the production performance of lactating cows. The four dietary treatments were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design with a total of 16 lactating cows having 4 cows in each treatment group. Legume supplementation was provided to the animal at 0, 20, 50 and 80% of straw in diets I, II, III and IV respectively. All animals were given concentrate at 1 per cent of their live weight. Animals under diet I consumed significantly lower (p<0.05) dry matter (% body weight and g/ kg 0.75/ day) than that of other diets. The cows fed on diet IV had significantly (p<0.05) higher digestible organic matter intake compared to cows fed on other diets. Digestible crude protein intake increased significantly (p<0.05) with the increase in legume supplementation. There were no significant differences (p>0.01) in butter fat and solids- not- fat production among the treatment groups. Daily body weight also increased significantly (p<0.05) with the increase in supplementation. Among the four diets, feed cost per kg milk production was highest in diet IV and income over feed cost was highest in diet II. It revealed that the diet II containing 20 per cent legume forage is the most promising for the benefits of the smallholder farmers.

Objectives:

To evaluate the milk production performance and the economic benefits of cows fed on straw based diet supplemented with leguminous forage.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the site named Banwari Nagar, a village of Pabna district of Bangladesh. The place is adjacent to the Baghabari Milk Vita (Milk Collection and Processing Plant), and belongs to the society of Bangladesh Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Limited. Twelve early lactating cows of pure Pabna breed with average body weight ranges from Design (CRD). Homogeneous productive (average milk production of animal was 3 kg/ head/ day) lactating cows of early lactation were randomly allotted to the four dietary treatments having four replications in each. The four treatment diets are presented. Concentrate mixture at the rate of 1 % of cows live weight was allowed to all cows. To accustom the animals with the test diets, an adjustment period of three weeks was followed before starting the actual feeding experiment. Feed offered and feed refused were recorded daily to determine voluntary intake. Milk samples were collected fortnightly in two consecutive morning and afternoons and analyzed for butter fat and solids- not- fat (SNF) contents. All the animals were weighed at the beginning and at the end of each of 15 days data collection period for the calculation of live weight changes. Feed and feces samples were brought and analyzed in the Nutrition Laboratory of Bangladesh livestock Research Institute (BLRI) and analyses were carried out to determine dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), organic matter (OM) and ash content. The results of the experiments were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine the treatment effects. Similarly, daily samples of feed offered were obtained, milled and stored in the freezer for analysis of chemical components. Dry matter (DM) content of as fed feed samples were made using Least Squares Difference (LSD).

Achievement/Findings:

Supplementation of legume forage to rice straw-based diet was found beneficial to the lactating local cows. Although it was observed that milk production increased with the increased level of supplementation of Vigna mungo, only 20 per cent level of supplementation can be recommended for overall benefits to the smallholder dairy farmers.
