Correlation and Path Analysis in F2 Population of Five Bread Wheat Crosses

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficient and path analysis among grain yield and six morpho-physiological characters have been computed in F 2 population of five bread wheat crosses. In general, genotypic correlation coefficients were found to be higher than their corresponding phenotypic ones. Grain yield showed significant positive phenotypic correlation with plant height, biological yield and number of grains per plant in all crosses. Plant height also showed significant positive correlation with biological yield and number of grains per plant in four out of five crosses. The relationship between number of grains per plant and 100- grain weight was negatively significant in all crosses. In general, the direct effects of number of grains per plant, biological yield and 100-grain weight were high in all crosses . High positive direct effects of number of grains per plant and biological yield on yield established the high genotypic correlation between them and grain yield per plant .The residual effects showed that 66.9 to 76.7% of the total variation in yield was contributed by the morpho-physiological characters included in this study.

Objectives:

To investigate the relationship between grain yield and six yield related morpho-physiological characters was studied through correlation and path analysis in F2 population of five bread wheat crosses.

Methodology:

Five F2 populations along with their six parental lines of breads wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the period from November 1992 to April 1993. Seeds were sown keeping line to line and plant to plant distance of 20 em and 10 em, respectively. About 400 plants were raised for each F2 population. One hundred and fifty plants from each F2 population of each cross and 30 plants form each parent were selected at random and data were recorded on days to heading, flag leaf area, plant height, biological yield per plant, numt?er of grains per plant, 100-grain weight and grain yield per plant. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients for these characters in all possible combination were estimated according to Johnson et al.(1955) and Singh and Chaudhary (1985). Path coefficient analysis was done according to the procedure quoted by Singh and Chaudhary (1985) and Dabholkar (1992) originally employed by Dewey and Lu (1959).
