Communication Exposure of the Farm Women in Receiving Homestead Farming Information

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of the study was to find out the communication exposure of the farm women in receiving information on homestead farming activities along with their preference on the media. Sixteen communication media were considered in this study in measuring the communication exposure of the farm women and their relationships with some of the selected characteristic. Data were collected from a sample of 100 farm women of two selected villages of Mymensingh District. Majorty (54%) of the women had medium exposure compared to 38% having low exposure and 8% of the women had high exposure towards various communication media. Husband, radio, neighbour, aged experienced women and group discussion came out as first five effective communication media used by the farm women in receiving information on homestead farming activities. Of the different groups, the individual media were found to be used by highest proportion of the farm women. The women preferred neighbour, husband, relative, Radio and BS in getting homestead farming information. Education, time spent in recreation and rest agricultural knowledge, inovativeness and organizational participation of the farm women were found to influence their Communication exposure significantly.

Objectives:

To find out the communication exposure of the farm women in receiving information on various aspects of homestead farming activities

Methodology:

All the farm women (homestead cultivator) of 2 villages- Ganoshampur and Mirzapur under Khagdohor Union of Sadar thana of Mymensingh district constituted the population of the study. Out of 425 farm women, 100 were randomly selected as sample. Data were collected from the women through face to face interviewing during 3-26 November, 1997. After collection, data were coded, compiled, tabulated and analyzed for necessary interpretation. The communication exposure of the farm women was considered as the dependent variable of the study while the 11 selected characteristics were independent variables.Statistical measures like number of and percentage distribution, range, mean, standard deviation and rank order were used in describing the variables. Coefficient of correlation test was used to explore the relationship between the dependent and the independent variables. Throughout the study, 0.05 level of probability was used as the basis . for rejecting any null hypothesis concerning the relationship between two variables.

Achievement/Findings:

The statistical analysis indicate and the selected characteristics such as education, time spent in rest, recreation prayer, agricultural knowledge, innovativeness, and organizational participation of the women wee significantly related to their extent of communication exposure, agricultural knowledge and opinion towards agricultural technology of the small farmers and their communication, exposure. The other characteristics of the farm women such a age, farm size, family size, farming experience, time spent in household activities and time spent in farming were not significantly related to their communication exposure. Finally, it may be suggested that the concerned agencies (GOs and NGOs) working with the women should consider these factors during planning, and organizing extension activities for the rural women. There is also a need for strengthening rural institution, inter agency cooperation, raining programmes and GO and NGO cooperation for providing greater communication exposure to farm women, and thus bringing greater productivity in agricultural sector as a whole.
