Effect of Green Manuring Crops in Different Cropping Pattierns on Rice Productivity Under Rainfed Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to find out the effect of green manuring crops in different cropping patterns on productivity of rice under rainfed ecosystem during July 1996 to December 1999. The experiment consisted of six cropping patterns (with five designed patterns) viz. Fallow-Direct seeded Aus rice-T.aman rice (R₁), Fallow-Direct seeded Aus rice + Mungbean-T.aman rice (R₂), Direct seeded Aus rice-T.aman rice + Grasspea (R₃), Direct seeded Aus rice-T.aman rice + Blackgram (R₄), Direct seeded Aus rice + Mungbean-T.aman rice + Grasspea (R₅), and Direct seeded Aus rice + Mungbean-T.aman rice + Blackgram(R₆). The result showed that yield and yield contributing characters of rice were significantly affected by green manuring crops. The pattern Fallow-Direct seeded Aus rice-Taman rice (R₁) showed the lowest productivity. Rice productivity increased up to 11-24 per cent due to inclusion of green manuring crops and their incorporation into soils. Rice productivity substantially increased due to growing of two green manuring crops within a pattern.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of green manuring crops in dirfferent cropping patterns on rice productivity under rainfed ecosystem.

Methodology:

The soil of the experimental field lies in agro-ecological region of Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (AEZ#9). It belongs to the Sonatola series of non-calcareous dark grey floodplain type. The initial soil values were 6.80 for pH, 1.31% for organic matter, 0.081% for nitrogen, 10 ppm for available P, 0.22 me/100 g soil for K and 10 ppm for available K. The experiment consisted of six cropping patterns (with five designed patterns) i.e. Fallow-Direct seeded Aus rice-T.aman rice (R1), Fallow-Direct seeded Aus rice + Mungbean-T.aman rice (R2), Direct seeded Aus rice-T.aman rice + Grasspea (R3) , Direct seeded Aus rice-T.aman rice + Blackgram (~), Direct seeded Aus rice + Mungbean-T.aman rice + Grasspea (Rs), and Direct seeded Aus rice + Mungbean-Taman rice + Blackgram (R6)' Seven consecutive rice cropping seasons were covered to complete the experiment. The first rice crop was grown during transplant aman season of 1996 and the last rice crop during transplant aman season of 1999. The test varieties of rice were; in Taman seasons of 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 were BR23, BR22, BR22 and BRRI dhan32, respectively while BR16, BR14 and BRRI dhan27 during Aus season of 1997, 1998 and 1999, respectively. Fertilizers of NPKS were used @ 70-22-33-10 kg ha^-1 during both Aus and T.aman seasons. All fertilizers were applied as basal dose during final land preparation of each rice crop except N. Urea was applied in three equal splits as top dress. Green manuring crops were grown and incorporated as per treatments. Data obtained on different parameters were analyzed statistically following analysis of variance technique with the help of computer package, MST A T and the significance of mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. Coefficients of correlation were also done between yield and yield contributing characters.

From the above result it might be concluded that green manuring crops (mungbean in aus rice and grasspea in T. aman rice) as realy crop could be grown for higher productivity of rice cropping system.
