Growth Maturity and Hibernation of Freshwater Snail Pila Globosa (swainson)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three different types of feed were used in rearing of young snail's Pi/a globosa in the laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture and Management, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh for 18 weeks. The feed components were 50% decomposed aquatic weed leaf (F 1); 50% fishmeal and 50% wheat-meal (F. 2) anf 100% fishmeal (F. 3). The highest growth rate and survival rate were recorded for the feed F. 2 and the lowest growth rate and survival rate were recorded for the feed F. 3. In laboratory conditions, all the snails went to hibernation when the room temperature became 19 to 21°C and came out from hibernation when room temperature rose 24 to 26°C. The snails had been in hibernation for about 100 days (December to March). The mortality rate was 10 to 18.18% during hibernation. They attained their maturity at the length of 30 to 35 mm. and at the weight of 7.5 to 9.0 g. They bred during the monsoon (June to August) and copulation lasted for 30 to 40 minutes. The female snail deposited eggs at the age of 10 months.

Objectives:

To know the biology of freshwater snail for scientific commercial culture for fish feed, poultry feed and human consumption.

Methodology:

Some fertilized egg masses were collected from the bank of ponds and placed in trays (60.96 em x 30.48 em x 15.24 em) in the laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture and Management, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. After the completion of hatching, emerged snails were given fine particles of rice bran as feed for seven days. Feeds were supplied twice daily, in the morning and in the evening. Water was changed on every alternate day and aeration was provided to maintain adequate oxygen level, water depth was maintained at 15 em in the trays. After seven days of hatching, the length and weight of the snails were measured and were transferred to rearing trays. Rearing of young snails: Six (6) trays were used to keep with snails for rearing. The snails (average initial length 4.9 m.m. and weight 0.30 g) were reared at two different densities: density 1 (20 snails per tray) and density 2 (40 snails per tray). Three different kinds of feed (F. 1, F. 2 and F. 3) were used for rearing of snails.
