Effect of Irrigation and Nitrogen on Yield and Protein Content of Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of irrigation and nitrogen on yield, yield component and protein content of wheat (cv. Kanchan) was studied of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 1989 to March 1990. Three levels of irrigation and three levels of nitrogen were applied. Both irrigation and nitrogen showed significant influence on all the characters studied. Two irrigations produced significantly highest grain yield (2120 Kg/ha), higher number of tillers/m², number of spikelets/spike and number of grains/panicle, whereas, no irrigation produced highest protein content of grain (14.37%). The application of 120 kg N/ha produced significantly highest grain (1921.67 kg/ha) and straw yield (2915 kg/ha), number of tillers/m² , number of spikelets/spike, number of grains/panicle, 1000-grain wt. and protein content of grain. Yield and yield contributing characters were significantly influenced by the interaction of irrigation and nitrogen. Treatment combination of two irrigation along with 100 kg N/ha produced the highest grain yield of 2215 kg/ha.

Objectives:

To study the effect of irrigation and N application on yield, yield components and protein content of wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Field of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 1989 to April 1990. Wheat cultivar "Kanchan" was used as experimental material. The treatments of the experiment were irrigation as no irrigation, one irrigation at 35 days after sowing (DAS) and two irrigation at 35 and 60 DAS and levels of nitrogen as 80 kg N/ha, 100 kg N/ha and 120 kg N/ha respectively. Split plot design was followed by assigning irrigation in the main plots and levels nitrogen in the unit plots of 20m² each. The experimental was replicated thrice. The experimental land was opened by a discplough and was finally prepared by ploughing and cross ploughing by country plough followed by laddering. The P and K were applied at the rate of 140 and 80 kg/ha through triple superphosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP) respectively. The nitrogenous fertilizer was applied through urea by following the experimental specification. All the phosphatic and potassic fertilizers and one-third of urea were applied in each plot at the time of final land preparation. The rest two third of urea top-dressed in two equal splits both at tillering and panicle initiation stage during 35 and 60 days of sowing followed by irrigation. the wheat cultivar "Kanchan" were hand sown on 3^rd December, 1989 at the rate of 120 kg/ha about 6 cm deep in furrows of 25 cm apart made by hand rake and covered with soil. Irrigation was applied according to the treatment schedule. The control plots received no irrigation. The first irrigation was applied after 35 days of sowing at tillering stage and the second one was after 60 days of sowing at panicle initiation stage. The collected data were analysed and the significance of the mean difference were adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test.
