Effect of Harvesting Time on the Yield and Yield Components of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh in T. aman season, 1988 to determine the suitable harvesting date(s) for higher grain yield of transplanted aman rice. Two cultivars viz. BR 11 and Nizershail and five dates of harvest eg. 20,25.30,35 and 40 days after flowering (DAF) were evaluated. Dates of harvest did not show significant effect on grain yield and yield components. The highest grain yield (2.40 t ha^-1) was produced at 35 DAF and the lowest was at 20 DAF which was statistically identical with 40 DAF. Yield potentiality decreased before and after 35 DAF. The cultivar BR11 gave higher grain (3.11 t ha^-1) and straw (4.46 t ha^-1 yield over Nizershil. The best milling ratio (7 3.68%) and protein content (9.44%) was observed with the grains harvested at 40 DAF which was statistically identical with 35 DAF.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of different date of harvest and to determine the earliest possible date of harvest after flowering without loss of grain yield and quality.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BAU, Mymensingh during June to November,1988. The experiment was laid out in a slit-plot design with four replications. The following two sets of Factors were included in the experiment: A) Cultivars: (i) BR 11 and (ii) Nizershail, B) Date of harvest: (i) 20 days after flowering (DAF), (ii) 25 DAF, (iii) 30 DAF, (iv) 35 DAF,and (v) 40 DAF. The cultivars were accommodated in the main plots and the dates of harvest were placed in the sub plots. The unit plot size was 4m x 2.5m. The seeds were sown on 13 July,1988 and 25 day old seedlings were transplanted in rows of 20 cm apart with a hill to hill distance of 15 cm. Two to three seedlings hill^-1 were transplanted in a well puddled land according to the design. The fertilizers were applied @ 80-60-40 kg NPK ha^-1 from urea, triple super phosphate (TSP) and muriate of potash (MP). Half of the urea and full amount of TSP and M P were applied at the final land preparation and rest of the urea was applied with 2 equal splits at 20 days after transplanting (DAT) and 35 DAT. The flowering date was considered, when 80% plants of a unit plot flowered completely. The crop was harvested and threshed manually. Grain weight was taken at 14% moisture content and the straw weight was taken after drying sufficiently. The grain yield were recorded from a 6 sq.m. (3m x 2m) central area of the plot and converted to ton per hectare. Filled and unfilled grain per panicle were taken from ten randomly selected panicles at harvest. Moisture content of rain at harvest and after sun-dried were determined by using Steinlite Moisture Tester. All recorded data were analyzed statistically and the mean difference were adjudged by Duncan,s Multiple Range Test.
