Energy Requirements of Different Tillage Methods

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The energy requirements of different tillage methods for producing ice in dry and wet land were investigated. The various tillage methods are bullock operated country plough, power tiller operated rotary tiller for dry and wet land preparation, tractor operated rotavator for puddling operation and moldboard plough and harrow for dry land tillage operation. The drawbar pull, field capacity and energy requirement for preparing dry and wet land by various tillage methods were determined. The total energy input was 207.50 MJ/ha, 198.75 MJ/ha, and 272.50 MJ/ha for bullocks, power tiller, and tractor ploughing in dry land, respectively. In case of wet land, it was 177.50 MJ/ha for bullock, 157.50 MJ/ha for power tiller and 241.25 MJ/ha for tractor. The yields of paddy ( Aus, BR-3) were 2.10 tons for bullocks, 2.20 tons for power tiller and 2.25 tons for tractor operated dry fields. The total energy requirements for producing one ton paddy were 98.81 MJ/t for bullock, 90.34 MJ/t for power tiller and 121.11 MJ/t for tractor operated dry fields and 31.14 MJ/ton, 24.60 MJ/ton, 41.24 MJ/ton for bullock, power tiller and tractor operated wet field. From the above results, it can be concluded that, power tiller operated rotary tiller is the best energy saving tillage method.

Objectives:

the present research was undertaken for finding the energy requirement for rice production for different tillage methods in Bangladesh

Methodology:

The paddy was grown in dry and wet seasons in three plots at the Bangladesh Agricultural University farm. Aus paddy (BR-3) was grown in dry season (mid March to mid April) and transplanted Aman (BR-11) was grown in wet season (end of June to mid August). The size of each plot was 52 m x 12 m. One pair of bullocks was used to operate country plough and ladder for land preparation in a plot. A power tiller operated rotary tiller was used for tillage operation in the second plot. Tillage operation in a third plot was accomplished with a farm tractor (International 434, 30 kW) equipped with 3-bottom mould board plough and disk harrow having 17 disks arranged in two gangs in dry land. In puddling operation, all implements with respective power sources were same as dry land preparation except a tractor-operated rotavator was used in the third plot instead of moldboard plough and harrow. The numbers of passes for land preparation were 6 and 3 for country plough and rotary tiller respectively. One ploughing and two harrowing were done in case of tractor operation in dry land tillage operation. Rotavator was used 3 times in puddling operation.Fertilizers N₂, P₂0₅ and K₂0 were applied at the rate of 100 kg, 60 kg, and 40 kg per hectare respectively in the paddy field. 50 kg nitrogen was applied at the time of sowing, 25 kg at 30 days after sowing and the remaining 25 kg before flowering of the paddy. P₂0₅ and K₂0 were applied in full doze at the time of sowing. After harvesting, the grains were separated from the bundle and dried in the sun. The paddy was weighed by a balance and recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The working speed of all power sources for tillage operations in dry land preparation and puddling operation were determined. It was observed that working speed in all power sources for tillage operation was higher in dry land tillage operation. It was due to hardness of soil. The equipment, depth of tillage, moisture content, physical and mechanical properties of soil and coverage of weed influenced the differences of working speed on the basis of the Present study on different tillage systems, it can be concluded that the power tiller system is the best energy saving system for land preparation. As the land holdings of Bangladesh are small and the energy crisis is high in the field of agriculture, energy saving machinery is preferred for the medium and small farmers of Bangladesh. Introduction of power tiller with small scale irrigation by deep tube well and shallow tube well will help to intensify the tillage and era production system throughout the year to feed the growing population of Bangladesh
