Performance of Some Brassica Juncea L. Varieties/lines Under on Farm Condition at Pabna

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The national average yield of mustard in Bangladesh is as low as only 555 kg/ha (BBS, 1989) compared to 2070 kg/ha in France. The present study was under taken to find out suitable variety of mustard for Pabna region of Bangladesh. The experiment was carried out at the multi location testing (MLT) site, Sujanagar, Pabna under AEZ-11 during winter season of 1990-91. The soils of experimental field belong to Sara soil series which consist of olive-brown calcareous loam and silt loam in texture with PH 8. (Anon, 1972) Six lines variety -J-3023, J-3018, J-4008, Daulat. Samba! and Rai-5 included as experimental materials. Varieties showed significant difference in plant height, number of siliqua per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, weight of thousand seeds while plant population per m² and number of branches per plant were not significantly varied. Rai-5 took least number of days (41 days) to flower and (96 days) to mature among the tested varieties. In this consideration, Rai-5 proved once again as a high yield potential variety among the materials.

Objectives:

To find out suitable variety of mustard for Pabna region of Bangladesh

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the multi location testing (MLT) site, Sujanagar, Pabna under AEZ-11 during winter season of 1990-91. The soils of experimental field belong to Sara soil series which consist of olive-brown calcareous loams and silt loam in texture with PH 8. (Anon, 1972) Stx lines/variety -J-3023, J-3018, J-4008, Daulat. Samba! and Rai-5 included as experimental materials. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three replications The unit plot size was 5 m x 2 . 1 m. The seed at the rate at 10 kg./ha were sown on 29 October , 1990, 30 em apart in line. The crop was fertilized with 120, 80, 60, 32 and 5 kg N, P2 05 , K cO. Sand Zn /ha, respectively . Half of N and the entire amount of PKS and Zn was applied at the time of final land preparation and the rest half of Urea was top dressed at 25 days after sowing. One weeding with thinning was done in the third week after sowing. Plant to plant spacing of 5 em was maintained in the line. During the growth trend the crop was attacked by hairy cater pillar which was controlled by hand picking. Harvesting was done at maturity of the crop. Before harvesting ten plants were selected randomly and uprooted to collect data for plant height. number of branches per plant, number of siliqua per plant, number of seeds per siliqua, 1000 grain weight and seed yield (t/ha). Data thus collected were statistically analyzed.
