Screening of Sesame Genotypes for Water Logging Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Screening of sesame genotypes for water logging tolerance was done at the research field of Agronomy Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during March to June 2010. Fifty sesame genotypes were tested against three waterlogged conditions such as no water logging (control), water logging at vegetative stage and at flowering stage. The results showed that 100% plant mortality was found in all the genotypes when waterlogged at flowering stage. When waterlogged imposed at vegetative stage, about 36.2-100% mortality was found in the sesame genotypes. On the basis of plant mortality, seven sesame genotypes, such as BD-6980 (36.2%), BD-6994 (52.38%), BD-6960 (52.94%), BD-6992 (53.38%), BD-7012 (54.29%), BD-6984 (56.67%) and BD-6985 (60%) were preliminary selected for further evaluation for water logging stress tolerance. Dry matter accumulation in different plant parts, number of capsules/plant and seed weight/plant were found higher in the genotypes BD- 6980, BD-6984, BD-6985, BD-6992, BD-6994 and BD-7012 under waterlogged at vegetative stage compared to control, though seed yield/m² decreased due to water logging in all the genotypes. Using stress susceptibility index (SSI), stress tolerance index (STI) and yield stability index (YSI), the genotype BD-6980 was found highly tolerant and genotypes BD-6984, BD- 6985, BD-6992 and BD-7012 were moderately tolerant to water logging at vegetative stage.

Objectives:

To find out the sensitive stage and tolerant genotype(s) of sesame under water logging at vegetative and reproductive stages.

Methodology:

Fifty genotypes of sesame were tested against three waterlogged condition, such as no water logging (control), water logging at vegetative stage and water logging at flowering stage. The crop was fertilized with 45-30-30-20 NPKS kg/ha in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum as basal. Seeds of each genotype were sown on 11 March 2010 in two rows of 2.0 m x 30 cm row spacing. Weeding and thinning were done at 25 days after sowing (DAS) and Ripcord @ 2ml/litre was sprayed two times at 20 & 30 DAS to control leaf cutting insects. Experimental field was irrigated following post sowing and at 29 and 40 DAS in control treatment. Water logging was imposed in the respective treatment by flooding and kept water logging (about 6-8 mm water above the soil) for three days. Water logging period was 29 to 31 DAS for vegetative stage and 39 to 41 DAS for flowering stage. The crop was harvested on 6 and 16 June 2010 for control and waterlogged condition. Data were taken on plant mortality, dry matter partitioning, yield components and yield. Five plants were randomly selected from each plot to measure the plant height, number of branches/plant, capsules/plant and seed/capsule.

Achievement/Findings:

From the study it might be concluded that reproductive stage of sesame was very much sensitive to waterlogged condition. Using different indices including stress susceptibility index (SST), stress tolerance index (STI) and yield stability index (YSI) the genotype BD-6980 was found highly tolerant and genotypes BD-6984, BD-6985, BD-6992 and BD-7012 were moderately tolerant to water logging at vegetative stage.
