Genotype - Environment Interaction in Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twelve maize genotypes were evaluated under seven cultural environments to study their genotype x environment interaction and stability performance. Highly significant genotype x environment interaction was found in all the characters studied. Env. 1 characterized by a package fertilizer application and early sowing appeared to be the most productive and favorable while the env. 6 and 7 with later sowing dates and without any added chemical fertilizers in soil were the most un favorable ones. Stability analysis suggested that most of the genotypes were more or less responsive and highly sensitive (unstable) to different cultural environments. Genotype M-60 was most stable for grain yield, whilst genotypes M-86, Pantnagar and Barnali with high grain yield were unstable under changing environments.

Objectives:

To study the aspects of genotype-environment interaction including stability analysis in · selected maize varieties/populations under some environments

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with 12 maize varieties/populations at the Genetics and plant Breeding research Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during October- April of 1994-95. The name of these varieties/populations are M-60, M-86, M-90, 818 - 2(m-98), S 35-3, S 53-4, Ferke, Pantangar, Pozarica, Shuvra and Barnali. Seven artificially created cultural environments were considered in the study. Five of them had different sowing dates but with common rates of fertilizer package (Env.5); and two of them (Env.6 and 7) were without any added fertilizer but differed or matched with others in sowing date.
