Genotype-environment Interaction on Pod Yield Stability in Groundnut Mutants

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genotype x environment interaction thereby stability in performance were determined for pod yield in five groundnut mutants/varieties across eight environments at seven locations of Bangladesh over three consecutive seasons, 1995-96 to 1997-98. Genotype environment interaction was significant, and only the non-linear component (pooled deviation) attributed it. Of the environments, Natore appeared the best of all during 1996-97 with Kurigram being the worst during 1997-98. Mut-3 produced the highest pod yield followed by Zhingabadam and D1/62-30. The common parents of the mutants, Dhaka-1, and the mutant 01/86-54 showed negative phenotypic indices and considered unstable. The mutant D1/62-30 appeared most stable exhibiting positive phenotypic index, nearer unit regression with deviation from linearity non-significantly different from zero. In contrast, Mut-3 and Zhingabadam appeared unstable.

Objectives:

To assess G X E interaction effects together with stability in performance of three groundnut mutants, their common parent, Dhaka-1, and a recently released Valencia type variety Zhingabadam over different locations and years

Methodology:

The experimental materials comprised of three mutants (D1/86-54, D1/62-30 and Mut- 3) developed by gamma irradiation to the cultivar Dhaka-1. Recently released Zhingabadam and the common parent of the mutants, Dhaka-1, were also included. These mutants/varieties were studied during the cropping seasons of 1996, 1997 and 1998 at eight environments of Mymensingh, Magura, lshurdi, Natore, Kurigram, Faridpur and Bhola. In all the environments the experiments were set in RCB designs, with three replications. Unit plot sizes were 5 m x 4 m. Seeds were sown at 15 cm distance within rows of 45 cm apart. The experimental plot was fertilized during final land preparation with 40 kg N, 120 kg P205 and 30 kg K20 in the form of Urea, TSP and MP. Normal cultural practices were followed when necessitated. Yield was recorded from an area of 4 m² excluding the border rows and it was converted to t/ha. Yield data of the experiments were pooled over environments and subjected to statistical analyses for the assessments of G X E interactions. Achievement/Findings:

The mutants/varieties had shown larger differences in each environments. The environment of Natore during 1996-97 appeared as the best of all. Additionally, three other environments, Mymensingh and lshurdi during 1995-96 and lshurdi during 1996-97 had produced comparatively higher yield. The environment of Kurigram during 1997-98 appeared as the worst of all environments. Among the mutants/varieties, Mut-3 had produced the highest yield followed by Zhingabadam. However, the mutant D1/62-30 produced higher yield than D1 /62-30 and Dhaka-1 yet predicted as unstable.
