Effect of Weeding Regimes on the Yield and Yield Components of Transplant Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was undertaken during the Transplant Aman season of 1992 to examine the effect of weeding regimes on yield and yield components of rice. The experiment consists of two treatments i.e., weeding regimes and the cultivar, was carried out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. Among the cultivars,BR22 attained the highest grain and straw yield and the lowest was in "Biroi" in normal weeding regmie. However, plant height, tillering habit and the thousand grain weight were unaffected by the weeding regimes. Weed free condition upto 36 days after transplanting (OAT) was proved to be the best for higher yield exploitation in rice. Out of the infested wee"d species, the grass type had exerted higher competition with the crop.

Objectives:

To asses the degrees of weed competition with the crop and to optimize the frequency of weeding in the cultivars with different weeding regimes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during August to December 1992. The soil of the experimental plots are sandy loam with pH value ranging from 6.5 to 6.8. The experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications with a unit plot of 12m² . • Experimental treatments: 1. Variety: a. BR22 b. Nizersail c. Biroi d. Dulabhog 2. Weeding regmie: a. No Weeding b. Weed Free c. Weeding at 18 OAT and 36 DAT (Normal weeding) d. Weeding at 18 OAT, 36 OAT and 55 DAT {Above normal weeding) f. Weeding at 31 OAT (Below normal weeding) The experimental land was puddled and leveled thoroughly with the help of a country plough ahd a' ladder. Weeds and stubbles were removed from the field. Fertilizers were applied' at the rate of 90, 90, 40, 60 and 10 kg/ha Urea, Triple supper phosphate, Muriate of potash, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate for HYV and 45, 45, 20, 30 and 5 kg/ha Urea, Triple supper phosphate, Muriate of potash, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate respectively for local varieties (BRRI, 1991). Thirty to thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted on 6 September 1992. Three seedlings )Nere use<;l per hill and the hill to hill and row to row spacings were maintained as 15 em and 25 em respectively. The infestation of Stem borer at the maximum tiillering stage was ccintroiled by a•ppfying Basudin 1OG at the rate of 16.8 kg/ha. After maturity, the crop was harvested plot•wise on 12 December (Nizersail, Biroi and Dulabhog) abd • on 21 December 1992 (BR22). It was then threshed, cleaned and processed to collect the relevant data in respect of the experimental requirement.
