Economics of Garlic Production in Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Faridpur and Natore to assess the economic profitability and agronomic practices of garlic cultivation and as well as constraints to its higher production. On an average 226 man days of human labour, 509 kg of seed, 130 kg of Urea, 77 kg of TSP, 35 kg of MP and 1 kg of Gypsum per hectare were used for garlic cultivation. Average total variable cost per hectare of garlic cultivation was Tk. 39826. Per hectare yield was 3115 kg while it was higher at Faridpur (3570 kg/ha) than at Natore (2491 kg/ha). Gross margin was Tk. 10014/ha, return above cash cost was Tk. 28291/ha and ratio of gross benefit to total variable cost was 1.25. The marginal rate of return (MRR) was highest in garlic, which was 35 percent with onion and 17 percent with wheat. Results of the study indicate that cultivation of garlic is profitable but not at satisfactory level due to some constraints.

Objectives:

To identify the existing technology employed by the farmers in garlic cultivation, estimate the costs and returns at farmers' level, compare the economic benefit of garlic with some other competitive crops
To identify the constraints to its higher production.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two thanas namely, Sadarpur and Natore under the districts of Faridpur and Natore where garlic is grown extensively. A complete list of all the garlic growing farmers of the selected villages were prepared for the year 1995-96 rabi season. A total of 100 garlic farmers were selected randomly taking 25 samples from each village (4 x 25 = 100). The necessary information were collected with the help of a predesigned and pretested interview schedule. The information on various economic aspects of garlic cultivation was obtained from one garlic plot of the sampled farmers. Further, to compare the economic bP.nefit of garlic with two major competitive crops, onion and wheat were taken from previous studies conducted by the Agricultural Economics Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (Elias et at. , 1988 and Alam et at., 1995). The information was updated using prices of respective crops in the year under study. Tabular method of analysis using average, percentages, ratio etc. were followed in the study.
