Causes and Consequences of Factors Associated with Agricultural Knowledge of the Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data were collected from 160 farmers, 80 from each of Chehelgazi of dinajpur district and Lebukhali of Patuakhali district. Apart from the age of the respondents the other selected characteristics viz. education, farm size, farming experience, farm income and agricultural knowledge of the farmers of Chehelgazi union of Dinajpur district were higher than Lebukhali union of Patuakhali district. And education, farm size, farming experience, farm income and extension contact of the respondents had positive correlation with agricultural knowledge of the farmers.

Objectives:

To measure the agricultural knowledge and other selected characteristics of the farmers and explore whether or not the knowledge on agricultural practices is influenced by other factors.

Methodology:

Data were collected from randomly selected 160 farmers, 80 from each of Chehelgazi Union of Dinajpur and Lebukhali Union of Patuakhali district. As the researcher has been working as an Assistant Professor at Dinajpur Agricultural College, so Dinajpur was selected as one of the locations for this study. Lebukhali Union of Patuakhali district is located near Patuakhali Agricultural College, which is a sister organization of Dinajpur Agricultural College. So, in order to have a comparative study, Lebukhali was selected for other study area. The respondents were selected randomly out of 630 farmers (321 from chehelgazi and 309 from Lebukhali Union). Data were collected through personal interview during 01-30 Jnauary, 1993. After collection, data were compiled, analyzed and tabulated for interpreting the findings. The statistical measures such as number, mean, percent, range and standard deviation were used. To compare the relationship between the same variable of the tow areas t-test was used. To explore the relationship between agricultural knowledge of the farmers and their selected characteristics Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient was used.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings indicated that the farmers of Dinajpur are more knowledge than the farmers of Patuaklhali. And majority of the farmers were found to have medium knowledge on agriculture. Education plays an important role in increasing agricultural knowledge and enable one to deal with agricultural activities in a better way. A significant and positive correlation between this two was also observed in a study conducted by Islam and lsalm (1993). The adoption of various improved agricultural technology has also been found significantly and positively correlated with agricultural knowledge. The existing relationship between agricultural knowledge of the farmers and some of their selected personal characteristics suggested that the agricultural knowledge plays a decisive role in enhancing or increasing farm income. Therefore, it may be recommended that the concerned authority might take appropriate steps through various extension activities to continuously increase the agricultural knowledge of the farmers to maximise farm production and to bring about economic betterment.
