Environmental Behaviour of 14c Chlorpyrifos in Model Rice Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted on the fate and behaviour with¹⁴C chlorpyrifos in model rice ecosystem. The radioactivity in soil, water and in different plant components of the ecosystem was studied. In the aquarium water, the highest concentration chlorpyrifos equivalent (0.015 mg/L) was obtained at 1 DAS and then declined following the half life value of 15.12 days. In soil the initial concentration of ¹⁴C chlorpyrifos residue was 0.67 mg/kg which increased to 1.81 mg/kg one day after spraying and thereafter declined up to 0.43 mg/kg at the last counting date of 90 DAS. In rice plants, all three portions viz. leaf, stem and roots accumulated the highest amount of chlorpyrifos (8.85, 0.82 and 0.46 mg/kg, respectively) on the day of spraying and on the 301 day a trace amount (0.04, 0.03 and 0.01 mg/kg, respectively) was left in leaves, stem and roots with the half life values of ¹⁴C chlorpyrifos of 4.49, 7.34 and 9.93 days, respectively m 35 DAS.

Objectives:

To study the residual effect if any, of the pesticide chlorpyrifos in the field by applying ¹⁴ C chlorpyrifos in a model rice ecosystem, and the fate of the pesticide during translocation in soil, plant and water by nuclear techniques.

Methodology:

The ecosystem consisting of two glass aquaria of similar size (90 x 40 x 45 cm), each containing 20 L water and 30 kg of soils collected from a nearby rice field were set up in the lab of Institute of Food and Radiation Biology Atomic Energy Research Establishment Ganak bari, Savar Dhaka. Rice (BR 30) seedlings of 30 days age were transplanted in both aquaria. Ten PVC pipes were ro.ndomly inserted into the soil of one of the aquaria after the application of labelled chlorpyrifos into the crop at the rate of 1.0 L/ha (BRRI, 1995). The other aquarium was treated as control. The ¹⁴C chlorpyrifos residues in water was determined by Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) following the technique sing after extraction with 15% dichloromethane in hexane. The radioactivity in soil and plant parts were determined by combustion using a Harvey Biological Oxidizer (Model OX-600) followed by LSC. Soil samples were extracted with 1:1 mixture of acetone and hexane to obtain the extractable portion of- ¹⁴C residues. Combustion technique provided the bound residues of the pesticide in soils. Plant samples (leaf, stem and root) were analyzed to combustion to follow the movement of pesticide in plant body.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of this study suggested that chlorpyrifos after application in rice ecosystem translocated to different component parts and retained there in different concentrations up to certain period of time. The water and in plant parts the pesticide residue although rapidly declined their consumption should not be advised before elapse of estimated time. In soil the accumulation of pesticides was comparatively higher but not in alarming quantities.
